rain rot remedies
Hi, does anyone know of some solutions that I could make myself for rainrot? Thanks for the help!

get some betadine and put it in the bath water. Betadine shampoo would be better. Really scrub the area well and alow it to sit on the skin for about 10 minuts. Do this evry day. Don't use the brushes on other horses. Clean and sanatise your gromming equipment and tack after each use.

Equal parts Listerine mouth wash and water. This worked pretty well for my friend's mare, but I would check and make sure that there is nothing in it that would hurt your horse.

Listerine is ok, I have not used it for rain rot, but my first trainer, told me to save my money and not buy body washes like vetroline, but to use listerine instead, and it worked fine, no problems as far as skin irritations go....I am dealing with rain rot too, but I bought EQyss shampoo and spray, not cheap, but it is guaranteed to work....how fast is the question I would like to know...good luck, there seems to be an epidemic of rain rot this year....

Listerine and baby oil, you dnt want to scrub it too hard or else the hair will fall off and leave a scar. MTG also works, and it smells like a bar-b-Q, so dnt use it when your hungry
! Hope I helped

Buddy has some weird stuff on his elbows then it showed up later on his back legs a bit. I called the vet and he said it was a fungus. I picked up some stuff at his office called Nolvasan. It was $5.00 for a pint of it and you mix it with water 6:1. I mixed it up in a squirt bottle and sprayed it on a rag to rub on the spots. I noticed by the next day that the spots were getting smaller and less "thick". I am still treating the spots on his elbows, but the spots are responding very quickly. Good luck

My horse had some kind of fungus, rain rot and his hair was falling out. The patches were oozing, and sticky. My vet said he had a bad fungal / rain rot skin condition. I treated him with the expensive medication that the vet prescribed. The next time he got it, someone gave me a home remedy for summer sores. I combined a tube of triple antibiotic ointment, hydrocortizone 1% onintment, and nystatin fungal ointment - all found in your local drug store. Combine all three and stir to make a paste.
The antibiotic oint. fights infection, hydrocortizone oint. stops the irritation and itch, and the fungal oint. fights the fungus.
Apply the paste to the areas after washing with betadine scrub. Leave the paste on. It reduces the irritation, stops the itching, and reduces fly attraction. Repeat the process the next day. After one to two applications, you could see the difference, the irritation and oozing stopped. If you have a bad case, once the sores have crusted, sprinkle on Goldbond foot powder. In about a week, you will see new hair growth.
I hope this helps.

Iodine seems to be the 'silver bullet' against rainrot.

As rain rot - more properly called dermastophylosis - in the UK known as rain scald, mud fever, greasy heel - is notoriously difficult to get rid of and a pig to manage I would suggest that you would be best advised to use such as hibiscrub (surgical scrub) or betadine (VERY similar).
