Question Questions on Cremellos

I need the color experts!

Ok so I am looking at getting another horse... (Just what I need... another horse...) Anyways... I found a lovely Cremello Mare... So I was wanting to know somethings about the color...

1. What causes a horse to be a cremello?
2. Do they always have blue eyes?
3. What color skin do they have? Is it black or pink? Or multi?
4. What happens if you breed a cremello to a (fill in the blank) colored horse?
5. Do they have lots of skin problems?

I have more questions I just cannot remember them....

1. A cremello horse is a red based horse who has inherited two copies of the cream gene. If it had only one it would be a palomino, if it had none...it would be a chestnut.

2.They always have light eyes.

3.Their skin is black, unless they have white markings. The skin underneath the white markings will be pink. Even if the markings are hard to see.

4.A cremello horse can only pass on his or her cream gene, so the resulting foal will be a dilute. Here is a chart -

http://www.doubledilute.com/color-chart.htm

5. Other than being insanely hard to keep clean, no more skin trouble than any other horse.

Cremello to a chesnut gives you 100% palomino. Cremello to bay is either smokey black palomino or buckskin. Cremello to black is either smokey black buckskin or palomino. Cremello to cremello is cremello. Cremello to perlino is cremello smokey cream or cremello. Cremello to smokey cream is either perlino cremello or smokey cream.

Heather, I believe you are wrong. Cremellos have pink skin.

Just like any horse with excessive white markings, Cremello's skin will burn around their eyes and muzzle. My trainer had a cremello pony, and with his fair, pink skin, during the summer we had to put sunscreen on daily. A process that pony hated with a passion!

A cremello isn't an "excessive white marking" though, nor is a Perlino. A maximally expressed Sabino or Splash, is an "excessive white marking". Same pink skin, but for different reasons

A Cremello will always give its offspring one copy of the Cream gene. Cremello x Chestnut = Palomino. Cremello x Bay = Buckskin, Smoky Black, or Buckskin.

Here is a useful little color calculator that you can use to find some other options: http://www.animalgenetics.us/CCalculator1.asp

Not that I have ever heard. I believe they are a little more prone to sunburn like any horse with a lot of pink skin, but otherwise I've never heard of any problems.

I keep plenty of sunscreen... I burn easily.... And I hate always having to use suncreen!...

Anyways... More Questions...

1. (For Fun) What colors look good on a Cremello?
2. I know there is a registry for Cream colored horses. What is the name of that registry?

Any pastel color looks great! There is another member here with a cremello and she uses a mint blue halter and it looks stunning!

Well, they are near-white so just about anything looks good on them. White and Black goes with anything.

Are you referring to the American White & American Creme Horse Registry?

This is their page: http://awachr.com/home

You could also register one with the Blue Eyed Horse Association: http://www.chasenit.com/page16.html

I think the Palomino Horse Association will register them as well: http://www.palominohorseassoc.com/
