Question for Classic Equine sports boots owners/users

I'd like to hear from people who use Classic Equine sports boots--do you find that your horse needs a different size than is indicated on the sizing chart? Because on the chart, it says to measure the cannon bone midway between knee and fetlock. I did that, and according to the chart, my mare should take a size small. A size small is for 7 1/4-7 3/4" cannon bone, but it says, 'or horses under 900 lbs'. My mare is over 900 lbs (probably not a lot, but still over) and I've never considered her to be really fine-boned... finer boned than my sister's Morgan mare, but she's not really really dainty or anything.
Does that sound like it's the right size for my mare, or have other people found that their horse actually takes a larger size than the chart says?

I can't say I've actually measured my horse's leg and compared it to the size chart. In complete honesty I'd say unless your mare is very fine boned, under 15hh and 900lbs, I'd go with a MEDIUM boot rather than a small.

I have a couple horses who are true small's in boots and even my medium CE's fit fine - they come up higher towards the knee, but I don't have any bulk around the leg.

I only have classic equine boots. I love them and they are great. A hint for sizing is the actual length of the cannon bone. I had a 14.2 900 mare that took a small. All of my other horses (15 tp 15.1 and 1000 to 1250 pds) take mediums. There is quite a difference in the small and mediums actually.

Well, she is on the smaller side of the size small--her cannons measure about 7 1/4--but she is just under 15hh, and probably between 900-950 lbs.
I'm kind of hoping to just find a used pair for a good price, because I'm only going to use them for training, and they'll get a lot of hard wear. The only trouble with buying a used pair from someone is that I probably can't return them if they don't fit!
It is good to know about your size small horses fitting the medium CE's fine. I guess I'll try a medium pair, and if they don't fit, I can resell, or find someone whose smalls don't fit and trade, lol.

I'm glad to hear that you like the Classic Equines so well. I've never used any sport boots before, so I was a little wishy-washy about what brand to get, but finally decided that the CE's would probably be the best for me. How long have you had yours? Do they seem to hold up pretty well with a lot of use?

Yes I have had them for a year and half. and besides my dogs getting into the tack shed and chewing on them they have lasted extremely well. Most of mine are white and have had held up to being thrown in the washer frequently. I really like them.

Is the measurement of your horse's leg the width around or the height? Because I am thinking she would take a small personally. If it is width, can you measure from the bottom of her fetlock to the bottom of her her knee from me. I sold the mare that wore the smalls and passed them along with her so I don't have any smalls here, but if you can measure like I asked I can compare it to a medium for you and see if it look like it would fit. Any pics of her legs from the knee down would help too.

Lol, I will have to remember to be sure and keep my boots out of the dog's reach! She is slowly outgrowing her puppyish desire to destroy things, but every once in a while she still goes on a rampage and tears things up.

The measurement I gave is the width around of her leg. That would be great if you could measure for me. I'll run out and do that in a minute, but in the meantime here is a picture of her front legs. It only shows from the bottom part of her knee down, but hopefully it gives you an idea.

Maybe a full body shot will also give you a better idea of how big her legs are. Remember she is just under 15hh, 900-950 lbs.

IMO, based off pictures she has a long-ish cannon bone and I wouldn't consider her truly fine boned. I still think a medium.

I think you could be right, but the measurements will tell us for sure. HGS is great isn't it? There's always somebody to help you out!

Okay, cminor--I just went out and measured, and from the bottom of her fetlock to just below her knee is 10 1/2". So, 7 1/4" circumference, 10 1/2" long.

Thanks for the measurements. After seing your pics I think medium too. I won't be home till tomorrow afternoon. Once I am back I will get a pair of them out and measure them with pics of mediums so you can get a better idea.

I have a pair of front and a pair of backs, both larges, and they've fit TB's and WB's great. Kinda like fly mask sizes -- small for arabs, medium for QH types, and large for the big ones. But again I only have experienced one size!
