Question About Withers...

A thoroughbred gelding of mine had high withers...is this a conformation fault? I always thought it was, but a lady who was looking into buying him said she didn't think it was. I've been wondering since.

Lol, no kidding. I only walked while riding bareback. Trotting would have put me in the hospital, lol! That would be a strange injury to explain, haha!

It depends on how high and how the horse's neck and back tie into them. Typically horses with more pronounced withers tend to have a little more athletic ability than horses who are "mutton" or low-withered (these horses tend to forge adn be heavy on the forehand). However, if they are really high and do not tye in well, then, yes, it would be a conformation fault. Basically depends on how the rest of the horse is put together.

Yeah, he is REALLY athletic. When he was six he took the blue ribbon in h/j in one of the Las Vegas circuit shows.

tbs are known for high withers. i like the high withers, it keeps you from sliding forward when riding bareback and jumping
