Question about results of a Paint cross?...

I was wondering.. what colored foal would be produced if you bred a paint-type mare (chestnut tobiano, mostly white) with a black QH stud?
Don't worry, I do not plan on breeding Em. I just want to answer this question for a friend.

um... it depends if the mare normally has coloureds, and if the stud throws 99% blacks, you could poss end up with a black baby with white markings (facial, legs...)

I really depends, you never really know what you might get!

i agree with what has been said, there's lots of possibilities unless the mare is known to throw color. i know a LOT of overo mares will throw color(atleast i think) most of the ones i have seen have anyways.

There are tons of possibilities, but a Tobiano throws color much more often than a overo....

I actually have the progeny report of a smokey black tobiano stud. He had over 70 foals, but I went through and wrote down what color foals he had with sorrel/chestnut mares because my neighbor has a chestnut overo mare and we wanted to see what she might have....

30 of his foals had sorrel/chestnut (overo, tobiano, tovero and solid) dams, here they are.....

Overo:4... Tobiano: 19... Tovero: 2.... Solid: 5
Bay: 4.... Sorrel: 7... Black: 9.... Buckskin: 4... Palomino: 3.... Chestnut: 2.... Brown: 1...... Total:30

The buckskin and palomino probably wouldn't apply to your situation, unless the stud is a smokey black and no one knows yet....

These are the results of what your breeding might be, just the stud and mares colors switched...
out of sorrel solid mares... black tobiano, sorrel solid, palomino solid, sorrel solid, brown tobiano, black tobiano, buckskin tobiano......

out of chestnut solid mares.... bay tobiano, buckskin tobiano, black tobiano, black tobiano

overos tend to throw color about 50% of the time when bred to solids, so if they're bred to tobianos then they probably throw it more....

that was one of my problems, I didn't do my research into the patterns in the Paint breeds or I would have known breeding my solid mare to the overo stud would be only a 50% chance of color and not been so disappointed when my colt came out solid. Oh Well.....

I can't say what you might end up with.........But when bred to a bay tobiano stallion, my sorrel QH mare foaled out a bay Tobiano colt...was almost a spitting image of his sire. You would have a 50/50 chance for color, possibly a chestnut, bay, or black colored or solid. The only guarantee is to breed to a homozygous paint for color.
