Question about paint horse showing

Okay so I have rescently bought a new paint horse and I was looking through the envelope that I got with her that had like her coggins and apha papers in it well I found a slip of paper that I think was her add at an auction and it says "Placed in South Dakota Paint Horse Club open and select futurities" and I had another member look up her on APHA and it said she had no APHA points so I was wondering if she placed in open and select futurities wouldnt she have APHA points? I was just wondering cuz I really don't know how all the shows and points and stuff works?

Well to answer yes and no In order to have APHA points there has to be a min. amount of horses in the class and that would require a top 1 or 2 placing depending on how many entries. I can't remember the details. Open wise it would have to be PAC approved. And Futurity classes I know of don't have APHA points it's the APHA classes Open, Amat., Novice Amat., etc.

Take for example if I wanted to I could state that my two year old mare was shown and placed in halter at a Fall Futurity last year (in Open, Novice Amat. and futurity classes) but, She didn't place high enough in a class with enough horses to get any points in the APHA classes. She is a money winner in the futurity classes though.

I hope that makes some sense lol.

Points are earned only at APHA-approved shows and only when the horse places ahead of other horses. There is a point schedule that goes something like this:

3-5 horses in class - First place horse earns 1pt.
6-8 horses in class - First place horse earns 2pts, second place horse earns 1pt.
9-11 horses - First place gets 3pts, second place gets 2pts, third place gets 1pt
12-14 horses - first place gets 4pts, second place gets 3pts, third place gets 2pts and fourth place gets 1pt.

etc....Look in the rule book for the exact schedule. It is very common for a horse to place in a class but not earn points.

Points are awarded in different divisions - Novice Youth, Youth, Novice Amateur, Amateur and Open. Many times there will be more than one judge at an APHA show, so each judge would place the class & there would be points awarded for each judge's placings.
Open shows (those shows open to all breeds of horses, not just APHA horses) sometimes qualify for the PAC-program through APHA. That's a really great program if you show in open shows, gymkhanas & other non-APHA events. The program awards PAC-points based on the above schedule if a Paint horse does well competing against other breeds.
