question about blue eyes

This is the first time that I've ever owned a horse with a blue eye, and I've been noticing that Shrek's one blue eye is always goopy. I wipe it off with a wet cloth and get rid of any dust or dirt around it every time I go out to see him, but it is goopy again next time I go out. Are blue eyes more sensitive to dirt?? In the winter when it wasn't dusty his blue eye wasn't goopy, so I'm pretty sure that it is a sensitivity to dust, and I'm hoping that when I get him his fly mask that it will help keep the dust out of his eye. Does anybody else have this problem with their blue eyed horses??

"When horsemen speak of a glass-eyed horse, they refer to an eye that is
any color other than normal [brown], but the eye is usually some shade of
blue. A 'china eye' is blue, a 'wall eye' is part blue and part white, and
a 'watch eye' is a mixture of yellow and blue.

Glass eyes are hereditary and may be seen in any kind of horse, although
they are most common in Appaloosas and paints. A horse may have two glass
eyes, or one glass eye and one normal eye. Horses with glass eyes have
perfectly normal vision. There are a lot of old wives' tales around about
such horses having poor vision or being susceptible to snow blindness. A
glass-eyed horse is no more susceptible to snow blindness than a blue-eyed
man as compared to a brown-eyed man. One often hears that glass-eyed
horses are night-blind. This is not ordinarily true.
….
Another popular fallacy is that glass-eyed horses are spookier or wilder
than other horses. This is simply not true. The white around the eye, or
'staring' effect, often makes them LOOK wilder, but the glass eye is not
related to disposition. There have been many well known horses with glass
eyes."

There also is an explanation of glass-eyes and some OK pictures at the
following site. http://www.ara

This is definetly not true for Shrek, he's one of the quietest non spookiest green horses I've ever seen. lol, sometimes I wonder if he has any spark at all!! Does it say anything about them being more sensitive to dust?? Or why they seem to weep more than brown eyes?

you mentioned "White around the eye" does that mean the skin around the eye? or just that they've got the dark pupil and light colored iris? because i rode a horse with a blue eye and the skin around it was black. it thought it was cool. ^_^ he neved had a problem with goop in his eye, no more than he did with the normal eye.

glad you brought this up, Hope is the EXACT same way. her one eye that is has white around it, is hlaf blue, half brown, but i notice it stays goopy, and yuck. kinda makes me think she has an infection or something. but i can wipe it off with a cloth and it comes back by the next day. maybe it's just something with lighter coloration around a blue eye. and like you said, Hope is such a gentle green horse, it's not even funny. yeah, she spooks some, but she has only done a crow hop once, and the rest is just shying sideways, never a bolt or full blown buck!!

Okay, here's the closest pic of his eye that I have, I'll get a better one of his eye next time I go out to see him.
