haha Boots has too much mane even to pull, (or shave the underside) so he is hogged. I think it suits him!

| Senior Member+ | I hate pulling a mane. 1. It takes such a looonnnggg time to do. 2. I am inapt at it. I either get too much hair, which is hard to pull...... or too little hair which makes it take that much looonnngggeeerrr. 3. It HAS to hurt, at least to some degree. As for show prep. I shorten and thin at the same time with the top part of an old clipper blade. I will use a clipper blade that has been sharpened to death and will no longer hold a sharp edge. I take it apart and use the top blade for the job. I never use scissors or thinning shears. It just doesn't look natural. At least not when I do it. It's always worked for me, even on thick manes.

Thanks everyone. I plan on bugging a few judges today when they get out of class about what they view as "acceptable" or not as well.

hey for one u shouldnt be yanking the horses hair out that means u are duin it wrong, yes some horses hate it i no with fudge i can do it so i use sissors and a mix of pullin a bit along with my fingers, that is sissors vertically,so u brush down with a mane comb then cut along with the tips of ur sisors, great way to do a horse with a thin mane also there is this fabulous thinning tool by dream catcher stud so u just have to brush it over to the off side then comb down and it thins the mane www.dreamcatcherstud.com i think is the link or google it |

| Senior Member+ | I really really tried not to respond to this. Don't want to turn the thread into something else, but..... I understood every word Fudge typed. Now, if we want to be particular....... Please use capitalization and punctuation.

Pulling Dreamers mane lasted about... 20 minutes. Now I was surprised seeing as she is an over sensitive over dramatic hot blooded mare. You should see her when it comes time to give shots... oh lord. She acts like you are out to kill her and the needle is surely the most painful thing in the world But after 20 minutes my hands were hurting and she was starting to toss her head evertime I went to grab some hair. Now she has a THICK mane so pulling it would have taken hours and no way was she putting up with that. So I did what Harli said. I actually flipped the mane the opposite way and used clippers to trim off some of the underside. Before that though I had cut it to a slightly shorter length though not quite the length I wanted it at, a little longer. After thinning the mane with the trimmers I used my scissors to cut it shorter and give it a more natural "unchoppy" look. Here is what I ended up with, and yes its a little long still for shows and braiding but I wasn't planning on braiding and any shorter and she would have a mowhawk. She still had fly away hairs and that front portion would always go forwards for some reason but hey, it worked. We only did small shows anyways lol. |

I was always told that you pull the mane to shorten it. Now on a thin maned horse this is a bad idea. But the idea was you take the long hairs and pull them. Any hairs longer than what you want the length of the mane to be, get pulled. So eventually you end up with a uniform length of natural hairs. Now on a long maned horse, you will be pulling for days and end up with a horse with very little mane. This is why if I pull (I can pull my QH's mane, she doesn't care, she's just excited to be getting attention lol) I cut it first, then pull to thin it, then cut it again to where I want it. You have to be artistic in cutting to get a natural look but its absolutely possible.
