a public thank you to my farrier .. he is the best ;]

have been very friendly with my farrier since I began using him a few years ago. He and his wife have become good friends of the family. I never really had a "schedule" with him until now as my mare's feet literally never grew. It was so strange but she could go about 3 months without getting even a trim. I use to have him out regularly just to check but it was a waste of money b/c there was no need for her to get done. oh it was such a great relief on the check book!

well i was spoiled with her as now my boy needs to be on a 4 week schedule so it is totally different. my pony can go longer as his feet are made of steel.but they tend to grow wide, not long, but they grow pretty wide in not too long of a time period and start to crack.

so i had him out to do the boys a few days ago. we reluctantly put back shoes on my gelding. he over reaches so bad and we tried for 4 months to keep his hinds off so he didnt rip off his fronts (even with bells on 24/7) and he rips the back of his front legs open when wearing hinds when he runs in the field. but alas .. he couldnt go w/o hinds.

so to get back on topic here .. i was saying why dont you just trim the pony while your here. and he decided to finish showing me how to do a trim (he started teaching me a while back). so he let me trim the pony while instructing me. then he gave me a rasp and told me to just give him a quick rasp once a week to keep his foot from getting too wide and cracking. now im saving a trimming fee every time he visits.

so im just doing this as a public thank you to my farrier. who is the bestest in the whole world thanks!!!!

**oh and i know to be very careful how much i take off. im really not taking off much, if anything im not taking off enough. just cleaning up the edge really. so no danger there. I also have been really reading up on feet and stuff for the past year or so as I think I might be going to farrier school once i get out of high school, not as a main job, but something else to consider. **
