Proud cut geldings

I just have a quick question. I was taught "proud cut" ment they were gelded late ( like after 5 yo). On another thread someone mentioned that it ment there was some stuff left so he could still produce testosterone (sp). If it is the latter then what do you call a horse that was gelded late? Is there even a name for it? Thanks

A horse that is gelded late is just that, gelded late. Since there is no rule about when you should geld a horse, there isn't an exact term that I am aware of.
Proud cut geldings are geldings that didn't get completely gelded, some tissue was left behind, allowing for testosterone to still be produced.

Yup....second what Shotgun posted!

And, just to expand on this topic....
Proud cut may have once been more common, but in today's "science-minded" world, it would require either a really incompetent vet....or an unknowledgable person doing a botch job to end up with a proud cut gelding. Most of the vets that I have delt with in the last 20 years actually show you that they have gotten all the tissue they should to confirm that they are not leaving you with a proud cut gelding.

Many people have misconceptions about if a gelding is proud cut or not. Sexual behavior is inherent...I don't even think it has to be learned. Many geldings exhibit sexual behavior, even if gelded fairly early....but especially if gelded after sexual maturity has been reached.

I always heard that "proud" cut meant that they had experience the "joyful event" with a mare before they got cut. Therefore they will always have the urge, because they have experienced it and know what it's like.

Nope, it just means that there was some "stuff" left behind. And, that shouldn't be confused with a cryptorcid (why can't I ever spell that?) which is a colt that hasn't dropped both testicles or a monorcid where only one testicle dropped.

I had a gelding that wasn't gelded untill he was nine years old,and he was cut he was a perfect saddle horse, never would have guessed he was cut late, and then I have seen youngsters that are cut proud, and they are ruined, still will mount mares in the pasture,or act studish around other horses. It all depends on how much of the tube they take, and if the stop the tostorone. When i have one gelded, the first thing I tell the vet, "Don't let him come up off the ground,"proud cut"! The vet knows exactly what you want then. There is a lot of people who like proud cut, because they like their horses, with a lot of fire, and to be proud.

I have a quesion. My gelding mounts other mares, so would he be considered proud cut? He's an ex racehorse, so like salem said, would they want the extra fire and energy for him? Or can geldings that aren't proud cut still know what to do?

Nope....he is just a gelding.

Unless your horse has high level of testosterone.....which are few and far between. You'll be hard press to find a TRUE Proud cut gelding.

Just too many people use that term wrong. "FIXING" an animal doesn't change the fact that it is Male or Female. Sexual drive is in the BRAIN as well. Not just in the fuzzy plums. So unless we do brain surgery as well, that drive and idea of what to do is still there.

Lmao, I thought that getting a colt gelded was brain surgery. We are just removing two extra brain cells arn't we? lol
