Prospect and how to look for it.

I was browsing through the critique forum and I came across an "XC prospect" thread and it made me wonder how to look for prospect in a young/horse in training.

hmm.. that is a hard question.. i will try my hardest..
ok if u were looking for a XC prospect i would think the horse would look comfortable.. but able to "go" if needed.. and if u could tell by the age maybe how it is built.. somthing that could also take a scratch and not worry and keep going .. if u know what i mean..
i hope that helps!

XC prospect is not something you can really tell by looking at pictures.

To me, riding the horse I would want a forward moving horse on flat and over all types of show jumping fences. A clean technique, able to think for themselves if put in a sticky spot. The horse has to be sensible at high speeds and be able to come back when asked by the rider.

"Prospects" can be labeled as such when they are still foals. A lot of it can be presumed by the bloodlines. Some of it can be assumed by the conformation. Some of it comes from the attitude and trainability. But even the most perfectly conformed, perfectly bred horse can still be a dud at "X" discipline because he doesn't have the desire.

If you're looking for a "prospect" that isn't under saddle, all you have to go by is the above. If he's under saddle but still green, you can start to judge form (either good form for hunters, for example, or good form as in safe). If he's well under saddle and has competed in the discipline you're looking for, that gets easier. Some "prospects" though are rejects from another. Maybe he was a XC or jumper horse who's just too slow and lookey, and is now labeled as a hunter prospect.
