Cool Pros & Cons of breeding?

Hi, I would absolutly love to breed my tb mare this upcoming spring, but have never breed before, i have friends that know quite a bit about breeding, My moms friend has a registered tb stallion that i want to breed with, but am worried about something going wrond with the breeding, pregnancy, birthing the whole process. Also don't have much money to spend on vet bill if something DOES go wrong. My friends horses just give birth without needing any help. Any advice?
Nikki

beautiful, both of them some perks of breeding your mare are: You get to be there from the start, breeding, pregnancy, birth, imprinting, raising and training baby. You can choose the right stallion to cross with your mare. some other things tao consider are: before you breed, you should have your mare cultered for any STD's (yup, horses can have them too) and once you get results (hopefully clean, if not you will need her flushed), if you can moniter her heat cycles and she is regular, you can trailer her yourself to the stallion (if he is close enough) so that you won't have to pay for mare care. Once she starts to accept the stallion, breed her daily until she no longer will (usually 2-3 days. then as soon as 14 days you can have her ultrasound done to confirm pregnancy (some vets like to wait longer, depends on your vet) You should have another done at about 60-90 days to confirm that she hasn't absorbed. She will need pnumabort shots at 5,7 and 9 months of pregnancy. Also, how old is your mare? Maiden (mares that have never been bred) mares that are older have a harder time conceiving. there are a lot of things that CAN go wrong, not saying that they will, that is a risk that every breeder takes when breeding anything. If you can earn and set aside a little money, even ask your vet in case of an emergency will he be willing to take payments, that would be a very smart thing to do. you never know with horses. I would also suggest doing research online or at your library on this topic

If you don't have the money to take care of the unexpected problems, I would recommend waiting to breed until you do. Besides problems, there are other breeding expenses that you'll need to consider such as a pre-breeding exam, vaccinations for the mare, tests for failure of passive transfer at birth. I would either look for a healthy foal already born, or wait until I'm financially sound to take care of a pregnant mare and pay for the unexpected. For example, if your mare presents with a dystocia and requires surgery, you're looking at a MINIMUM of $3,000 - $5,000 dollars and most likely, a dead foal.
