As much as I would like to donate to every rescue that asks, there are struggling rescues in my own county that get my money.

Perhaps you would do better to petition your local community and then anything you get off the forums would be gravy.

yeah i know but i live in a large city where its hard to connect with horse people

Even big cities have ag stores, tack shops, animal shelters, flea markets, swap meets, community bulletin boards, newspapers, radio stations (which do free advertising for non profit orgs)

I heard that Pony Express in Covington is / or will be re-opening, that would be a good place to start.... I believe that is pretty close to you .

HorseTown in McDonough is another good place to place flyers.
