Honestly, if he doesn't want to be caught, a halter isn't going to make things any easier. He can easily stay far enough away from you and if you were to grab the halter, he could just rip away from you.
Sooo much easier to leave it off.

Padded halters is what I would recommend, no rub at all! The collar halters are perfect also and cheap too!

Mmmm. I never turn out with a halter. I've got into many a fight over BMs and BOs over it- but I just won't have it. Apache has TWICE gotten stuck in his halter while grazing when I was there WITH him on the other end of the leadrope!

Plus, all the horror stories like Tempo mentioned. uh!

It's just not worth it. If the horse gets out, he'll be just as easy/hard to catch with a halter as he will without one.

A break away halter is safe for turnout. My boy has one and is padded as well, no rub marks at all. Never had an issue. I bought it a few months ago, put it on him and came back the next day to find that he broke it. lol. Of course it was only the safety leather that snapped so no biggie, I just got more straps, but it worked!
