Pregnant and in heat???

Um yeah, I'm a little confused... So I was told when I purchased my horse that she was pregnant (a definite yes) That was in April and she's due sometime this June...well at least I thought she was. She's gotten quite fat in the belly, and has the vein going across it to the udder, etc. She hasn't bagged up yet but they told me she is one that really doesn't until giving birth. I recently brought her in to stable her because I figure she's got to be getting relatively close. The people I'm boarding her with tell me she couldn't possibly be pregnant because she's been showing signs of heat and has even gone so far as to let some of the geldings she was sharing a pasture with mount her. So what I'm wondering is, has any body ever heard of a pregnant mare *especially one this far along* going into heat??? I'm just curious because she definitely LOOKS pregnant.

Thanks,
~Emily~

I believe that some mares do act like they're in heat when pregnant, but that's about all I know.

It is very unlikely, but is possible. The only way to know is have her palpated by a vet. Since she's board, you probably have a vet out fairly often- just ask next time they have a vet out that your mare be palpated. It only runs about $15-$25 here, I think.

It's possible. My mom had an old mare 4-5 years ago that would show signs of heat throughout her entire pregnancy.
They also had a mare that showed signs of heat for the first little while after she was bred and confirmed in-foal.
Was never a problem with breeding the mares, foaling, etc. Everything always went perfectly normal.

I had 3 mares that would stand to be bred up until the day they foaled. So it's entirely possible. Do you know her breeding dates?

Yeah I'll have to call the vet Monday when I get off work and see if they won't check her out. I just thought it was really odd... The folks who board her said there was no way she was pregnant but she certainly LOOKS it...If she's not, I'm putting her on a diet!

Yes she can still be pregnant. My mare did this as well and I was told by my vet that in the wild, mares that are getting close to foaling will let the stallion mount them to kinda regain there attention. A way to keep themselves protected. So I'd say if your mare is indeed in foal, shes getting pretty close, like a week or 2.
