Talking Pregnant?

Have any of you guys heard of measuring infront of and behind your horse's belly to find out if they might be pregnant or not?

I was talking to my trainer about my mare that I bought 3 months ago for my daughter. We're starting to think that she might be pregnant. I have an appt. for her to be checked by the vet but my trainer said that...for fun, go home and try this string test. If the front of her barrel (right behind her front legs) is smaller than the back of her barrel (right before her back legs) then they think it's like an 80% chance that she might be pregnant (nothing scientific though..lol).

I tried it and she is about 2 1/2 inches larger in the back. I think it will be fun to see what the vet says.

Well, I bought her for my daughter to learn to ride on so we weren't really planning on breeding her for a while, if at all. I have to admit that now that I know there is a possibility... it gets me kind of excited! It will be a great learning experience for both my daughter and I. I'm nervous cuz Iv been reading about what all is involved but I'm pretty sure I'm up to the challenge...I hope! lol!

That's another thing I'm concerned about if she's not preg. I didn't have her on much hay when I got her cuz the grass was so plentiful at that time. Will too much grass do the same thing?

I guess it could go either way then. I would hate for it to be hay belly. If it is then we'll have to get the girl on an exercise program.

wouldn't hurt to have the vet out so you don't have any "suprises" and you can get the care she needs set up properly

Yeah, that would make me feel better. She really hasn't had a real good "look over" since I got her so it will be good to do no matter what. Thanks!
