Pregnant?

Hello everyone. I came across this forum while trying to figure out whether or not a mare that I look after is in foal. She's not mine, and her owner got her from a guy last Fall who had bought her off the meat truck. Anyway, when I saw her in Dec. I thought she was pregnant, not just fat likt her owner thought. After some research, I found out that she'd been with a stud from Dec. 05 until March/April 06. I took some pics this morning to see what you guys might thing... They aren't the best, and they don't show how big she really is, but hopefully you can get the idea.

She certainly looks pregnant!! The way her stomach is so low down like that she looks like its pretty near too!! Best of luck.

As low as the belly is being carried, I would say a big fat 99.9% yes to that one being preggo!

I'm guessing she is pregnant, but I have seen geldings look like that too. Only one way to tell for sure...have the vet out.

She looks pregnant, but the only way to know for sure is to get the vet out. Which you need to do because if she is pregnant she needs to be getting special care.

I agree. We could all make guesses to whether or not she is pregnant- but best thing to do is to have the vet out to check. Not only will this help in her care- but it'll give some time to prepare for the arrival of the unexpected little one.
I'd suggest to the mare owner to have the vet out to check. If he/she is not willing to that--then I'd be extra careful the next few months and really keep an eye on her. If it really does seem as though she is bred (which fromt he pics you posted seems like its a pretty good possibility)- treat her as so. The worst thing that'll happen is she will have a little extra care for a while and you'll have no foal.

Can you see/tell if she is starting to bag up?

I spoke to the owner and suggested she have the vet come out to see her, so he's coming out on Thursday. She hasn't started to bag up, although she is starting to shrink up around her croup area, and loosen up around the base of her tail. What worries me is that she's an older mare, maybe about 23. She's gotten bigger since she arrived at my place. 2 days ago, I though something was going to happen because she was eating, but only small amounts at a time, she was kicking at her belly, and lying down alot which she never does. I called the vet and he just told me to keep a close eye on her. Could have been mild colic I guess. I'm just a little worried because even though I've been dealing with horses for several years now, I've never dealt with a pregnant mare or foals.

I'm glad the vet is coming out to check her. Let us know what happens.

Oh, the other thing I forgot to mention is that there are many times when you can stand back and look at her from behind, and on one side she bulges right out, and on the other, she doesn't look so big.
