I don't recommend taking her halter off if you are having catch issus, and a catch rope may help too. Kristina

Horses are VERY curious and if you sit and read a book or somethin in her pasture she'll come over to you.Couldn't hurt to have feed on hand just as extra incentieve (sp?). I agree with everyone else get a vet out as soon as you can catch her.She looks VERY preggers.Even in the first few pics. Her hips do look a bit fuller and her coat has got color to it.Better than in the first piccys. Is it just me or does something seem a little off about her back legs?

Honestly, it's great that you're posting about this and trying to see what others think. But you really need to call your vet and have he/she look at the mare and find out if she really is or not. Because if she is then she needs to be given a very thorough check up to make sure everything is ok with her and the possible baby.

Thanks guys... I went out there for about an hour and a half today... the mare saw me and disappeared. She trotted down to the bottom of the pasture... I stayed at the top where I could see her, and just stayed there for a little while... she kept her eye on me and stayed away... but I didn't expect much. After I finally manage to catch her, I'm going to change her halter to another, sturdier, smaller one. She's only about maybe... 14.3 hands, in that, and she's an arabian.... very fine boned little thing... has a small, delicate head that her current halter doesn't fit at all... I forgot to take my camera... so no piccies, but I'll try and get some more tomorrow.

Any way you can get a surrogate mare to take over nursing when she has the foal? I don't think she'll do well nursing a foal. Mars's mom had trouble nursing him and she was a healthy mare already. Good luck with her.

Probably not... We may be able to take the foal from her once she has it and bottle feed it... but that's a slim possibility... probably the most we'll be able to do is wean early... like as soon as the foal starts eating grains and stuff...

Oooh she does look preggers. I sure hope for both your sakes that it's just a GIANT haybelly though.... Time to start getting her accustomed to humans; You'll want to get a vet out soon as reasonable, and it'll come in handy if there's a foal. My question: Why would your uncle get a horse in that state? Just curious...

As for why he got the horse, he helps this guy, Larry out a lot with baling hay and all that stuff (we get free hay from Larry when my uncle helps him out)... anyway, Larry offered my uncle Nightmare and her stud colt for free for helping him out. My uncle took Nightmare, because he didn't want a stud colt... my uncle felt sorry for Nightmare because she was in such bad shape and decided to fatten her up and then have me train her as a riding horse for his grandkids when they get older and for my younger cousins who sometimes get left out when it comes to riding because they don't have a horse to ride... that sort of stuff... Basically, it comes down to the fact that my uncle just felt sorry for Nightmare and decided to take her...

| Senior Member+ | That part might have something to do with the fact that the current halter is twisted and on completely upside down But you are right...a better fitting halter will be a great improvement It sounds like she's in a large pasture...is there anyway to run some hot wire (or gates, or panels or SOMETHING) across it in sections, sectioning her in smaller and smaller until you can get a lead attached to her (or someone to rope her, if you know anyone capable) and get her in a smaller pen. Usually I would say use the wait for her approach, but in her case, I think its imperative to get her caught NOW (and started trusting you), and when she's in a large pasture its just going to take that much longer to get her to trust you by just sitting. If you can get her up in a small pen, you will see her progress much more quickly in the trusting you while you sit program.

I may be able to find something and slowly corner her in... otherwise, we have nothing to work with... Maybe I can find a long rope and get a friend to help walk her into a corner... or something...
