| Senior Member+ | I had a rescue that was int he same shape, and preggers, she looks really similar... 23 days later... Belly getting bigger... I vote for preggers.... But get a vet asap, even draw blood youself if you can, and get the sample to the vet, or get a urine sample if you can. Kristina

| Senior Member+ | I will bet if you went out there every day, and took a bucket of grain for her to eat, she would gain weight, and also gain trust in you....in her current condition, she will suffer, as will the foal, if she is indeed in foal....she will be lucky to survive giving birth in her current state....good luck..Cathy

| Senior Member+ | Hmm honestly her condition only seems to have improved a little bit. Might be due to you guys not knowing she could be preggers. She worries me, I dont know about this kind of stuff, but I'd really be pumping her with food.

Her coat also looks healthier to me, IMHO, she had none and now has some. It isn't going to be shiny right away. Having dealt with a lot of rescues, sometimes changes can be subtle, depending on length of time and the individual horse, age, etc.... I would be dosing this girl with beet pulp and a fatty oil. Even at only 12 I might consider senior feed, but not too much all at once. If she is preggers, then she definately needs a mare and foal feed and more fat/protein. Build her up slow and steady. How long was it between the first and second set of pics? First thing I would do would be to consult a trusted vet/nutritionist. Preggers or no they can give some good tips on proper feed for her. The trust issue is a major factor, i know the OP mentioned making a seperate, smaller run for her was a possibilty, please, do what you can. that way you know for sure what she is eating. Bless you for taking this mare in! Kristina

| Senior Member | Poor dear..... I'd say she's preg as well. I'd be doing some join-up with her, as she can not foal in that paddock (barb wire isnt safe for a wobbly foal) & the halter on the mare either comes off, or get 1 to fit! With feed, provide as much roughage as she'll eat, better than pumping her full with too much protein etc. As im in Aust, our feeds are different, but provide a good vitamin & mineral supplement, with something with protein & also a energy food as well... Roughage will keep her warm, keep her gut moving & put weight on! Make sure all worming & vaccinations are up to date, a drench after foaling will be a good move. As soon as you can handle her, the better as i feel that she might have trouble giving birth, in that state. Plus the halter & fencing is dangerous. Best of luck with her mate, keep up the good work. Take care. |

I'm planning on going out there today and just hanging out with her and the cows... take some feed and a few treats and see what happens...

| Senior Member+ | Wow, look at all the green grass around her in the first set of pictures. Looks like there was plenty of roughage for her, she must have been incredibly wormy and/or have trouble with her teeth? or put on it for very limited time? She does look pregnant to me, but if you could get a close look at her bag, it should be getting full with as far along as she looks. Good luck and kudos for taking her in and helping her. Lori
