| Senior Member+ | Predicting height -- how tall were/are your babies? We sticked Allure last night, and she's 11.1 and 1/10th hands at 4.5 months. Her cannon bone says 13hh, but I've heard that's not accurate until they're yearlings. It's possible she just has midget cannons... if she only hits 13hh I'm going to have a kitten. Her dam is 14hh and her sire is 15.2hh with a tendency to produce taller babies than himself on shorter mares. I'm hoping for at least 15hh! Does anyone have any experiences to share? How tall were your babies at weaning time and how tall are they now? Was the cannon bone's measurement accurate?

| Senior Member+ | I've always heard that you do the predictive measurement at 2 years old. I did the string test with my filly, and it shows she's supposed to finish around 16.2. I'll let you know in about 4 more years when she stops growing how accurate it is.

| Senior Member+ | How old is your filly now? I've heard so many different things. My boyfriend's mom says that it's accurate as soon as their tendons strengthen and they're standing up on their pasterns. But if that were the case, I'd be looking at a 12hh pony mare. Not gonna happpen, she's grown three inches in the past month and a half or so! I've also heard six months and a year. Eh. Growww, filly, grow!

| Senior Member+ | You take a piece of string and run it from the foal's elbow, down to the middle of the knee, and then rotate the end that was at the knee up to above the withers. Where the string ends is supposed to be the horse's adult height.

| Senior Member+ | My filly turned 2 earlier this summer. I did the string test when she was about 21-22 months old... so I was a little before the 2 year mark. She's a Trakehner, so that means she won't fully mature until she's 6 or 7. Her half brother grew a lot until he was 5, then put on another 2 inches before he turned 7.

| Senior Member+ | Oh, okay, cool. I don't have anything to compare her to at the moment, but she just seems to be getting SO big SO fast! Here she is... last week, I believe. That's mom in the background. She's NOT this parked out behind, just lazy! ![]()

| Senior Member+ | Ok, you asked for pictures! I love to show off my baby girl... Arwen as a premature baby... Mama is 17 hands. She was 20 days early, and VERY weak. The vet doesn't think this will affect her growth potential or overall height. ![]() Her at about 18 months, at her first little halter show. ![]() Kind of dark, but to show her size now: This was about 8 weeks ago. (I'm 5'4") ![]() She never looks this big in person, but in the pictures she looks HUGE for a 2 year old!
