Pre-Purchase Exam: Who does them?

I know that all the books, articles, etc. I have read on buying a horse always say to do a pre-purchase vet exam, but how many of you guys actually do them?

I am going to put a poll to go with the question so you guys can vote. So vote away, and if you want, share why you do as you do.

Also, can you share a rough idea of what your cost was for a pre-purchase exam? I am curious as to what the going rate is.

I have yet to do one, but I've also never spent more then a few thousand dollars on a horse. Here were the situations for reference:

1st horse: 2 year old appendix filly, knew her since birth
2nd horse: 20+ TB/WB gelding, bought morning he was to be sent to auction, had been riding him lightly for several months. (Fell in love, had to buy him!)
3rd horse: 6 year old App mare, had been working with her for apx 3 months prior to trading my 1st horse for her.
4th horse: owned by an HGS member, spent 2 weeks with him before buying him....his owner is a personal friend, so I know his history with her.

I haven't done one, but I would if I was buying a horse that I didn't know for a while, or know the owners.

I get them done on some. But not always if I really know the horse and about its health. If I don't know too much about the hrose I have one done.

I have never done one. But I've never bought a 'going' horse before either.

It really depends on how much I'm spending on a horse, what I'm going to do with the horse, ect. I've always been lucky having a vet for a father...he'd just come with me and basically do an informal exam (no xrays) and give an opinion, but now he lives too far away, and I haven't purchased a horse since. I'd really have to think about it....so still flip flopping around here I'll just finally say DEPENDS instead of babbling on like an idiot.

If you consider a pre-purchase exam having a coggins test done(with the results being negative) and a clean health certificate done, then yes we do either one of the two or both on a horse that we buy. We always want a current neg. coggins done....and if they are crossing state lines or we don't know where they are coming from then we also want a clean health certificate done.

did one on joker just because he had an old racetrack injury on his knee (fluid pocket)

other than joker we vetted "taz" my sisters horse because he cost a bit, didnt do one on any of the other horses we/ve bought (like 6 or so over the years between me n my sis) just because its not worth it if the horse dosent cost a lot (our ponies)
