pre-purchase exam

Ok I have some questions about the “pre purchase exam”. Do you need to be present during this exam or does the vet simply call you with the results? Approximately how much $$ do they cost? Last question, how far will a vet usually travel for these exams? Sorry for the dumb questions

I want to be present at all prepurchase exams, to see how the horse reacts to a stranger [vet] messing with him/her. Usually they cost anywhere from $200-$300, at least they did when I lived out in So Cal. Now that I'm in North Carolina I'm not sure how much they go for.

And as far as traveling, that's up to the vet himself/herself.

Hey thanks! Wow that's pretty expensive. I know it's worth it though in the long run. Thanks for the help!

First, they aren't dumb questions at all Yes, I would definitly try to be there for the vet check, especially if your aren't familiar with the vet. Vet checks range in price depending on how in-depth you want the tests to be. If its simply a quick look over exam, it probably won't cost much at all. If you want flex tests, x-rays, etc, etc, then you can expect to pay a few hundred dollars. As for how far the vet will travel, that all depends on the vets in your area. Luckily, I live in an area where there are many equine vets to choose from, some just a few miles away. Others may allow you to haul your horse to them and still others may travel several hours to perform the tests. (Expect an expensive farm call charge tho!) LOL

Can I ask what the purchase price of the horse is? I haven't paid for a vet exam on any of my horses. They have had special circumstances where it made it a moot-point. However, if I were ever to pay more then a couple thousand dollars, I would certianly invest in a check

I never got a prepurchase exam on any of my horses. But I have had people get them on my horses when they were looking to purchase them from me.

Unless I'm spending over $4000, I won't get a vet check. If I feel that there might be something wrong with the horse, I won't purchase it, OR I will offer them a price that reflects what is wrong with the horse.

Thanks guys this has all been a HUGE help! I don't plan on really searching for a horse just yet. I'm in the process of getting pasture/fencing ready and so on. This is going to be a long process I'm guessing. This is the first of many questions so I'm sure you all will be reading more from me in the future! Thanks again guys!

Whatever you do, do not let the owner use their own vet for YOUR PPE. Most vets will refuse to do so anyway, but there are some...........
