Exclamation Possibly getting colt need some input!!!

Hey,

I may possibly be getting a 4 month old colt mid august. I was wondering what exactly do you teach a weanling? He's already trailer broke, halter/lead broke, he picks up all 4 feet without a problem, he's very friendly and curious, he can be groomed with no problem, he stands tied well. Is there anything more to teach him at this point?

My aunt used to breed and sell Appaloosas (thats what he is, an Appy) so I know I can use her as a resource but I'd like to know you guy's opinions.

have him live with another horse his age if possible, he also needs to learn to be a horse. keep up with the stuff he already knows, work on it a couple times a week (SHORT sessions), you can also start with clipping, trailering, weird farrier tools, ropes around his belly... if you have a good ponying horse, you can start ponying him on trails, in the arena, etc...

I agree with the above post^^ Also, I have started to teach my 10 week old colt to ground drive (no bit, just in a halter). He also knows his pressure points, to move away, etc. Mess with his mouth. Dezi loves it when i allow him to stick his halter in his mouth before i put it on. What about bathing? Mess with his ears, see if he'll let you clean his sheath. Um, other than that, I'd say let him be with other foals/horses. Have fun! They are a blast!
