| Senior Moderator | Popeye K and Tommy Serio Lead the Field of Top Hunters on Second Day of Winter Equestrian Festival Competition Wellington, FL- January 27, 2005- The hunters started their second day of competition today at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL. The first hunter championship awarded at WEF was in the Regular Conformation Hunters. Popeye K and Tommy Serio, riding for owner Elizabeth Spender of Keswick, VA, walked away with the tricolor ribbon after winning three out of four classes on Wednesday. The big bay stallion started the circuit off right, winning the model, under saddle, and the first over fences class. He followed that with third, fourth, and fifth place ribbons in the remaining over fences classes, which gave him a large winning margin over reserve champions In Disguise and Shachine Belle, who rode for owner Ellen Toon of South Salem, NY. Popeye K and Serio were 2004 USEF National Champions in Green Conformation. The move up to the Regular Conformation classes, set at 4 feet, seemed to be an easy one. “We have a really high esteem for this horse,” said rider/trainer Tommy Serio. Although Serio is quite used to winning, he smiled when asked about starting the year with a championship. He revealed, “I’m a little superstitious. When I’m playing poker, I hate to win the first hand. Winning the first week here is great though.” While there are not many stallions that compete and win in the hunters, Serio believes it is positive for the horse and the industry. “The fact that he’s a breeding stallion and he wins is very exciting; not only for what he can do now, but for what I think he can add to the hunter industry later on with his offspring,” Serio explained. The Regular Working Hunter division had a runaway winner this week. Gray Slipper and Louise Serio won three out of four over fences classes and received second place in the remaining two classes of the division. The elegant gray gelding is owned by Bridget Hallman of Oyster Bay, NY. Reserve champion went to Take Away, ridden by Havens Schatt and owned by Cortie Wetherill of Malvern, PA. The Second Year Green Working Hunters at WEF have a new star in the first week of competition. High Cotton and Ken Smith won three over fences classes over the past two days and collected the championship. The higher jumps in this division are an advantage for the pair, who moved up from the First Year division. “The bigger the jumps, the more he tries. He can get a little careless over the smaller jumps,” Smith clarified. “The last few days he really put in a lot of effort and had some beautiful trips. He really rose to the occasion.” Smith rode for owner Christy Russo of Miami, FL, who will also be showing High Cotton in the Small Junior Working Hunter division this weekend. Reserve Champion in the Second Year division went to Cool Blue and Scott Stewart, who rode for owner Carolyn Kelly of New York, NY. Tomorrow will feature the championship awards for the First Year Green Working Hunters, the first equitation classes of the 2005 season, and the start of the Amateur/Owner 18-35 classes.
