| Junior Member | Pony bagging up???? My daughter's pony seems to be bagging up. I squeezed her teats today and milk actually squirted out. I called the previous owner and was told he didn't think she was bred last year but she wasn't on his farm last summer (she was at a friends). She had a baby last summer in August. I called the vet and he said it could be a false pregnancy. Has anyone had a mare that had a false pregnancy? Any info would be great. Thanks |

| Senior Member+ | No horses, but I've had a cat with a false pregnancy. She remained her same weight, but bagged up & even had milk. It lasted a while, but that may have been because her daughter was still in our possesion & liked to snack.

| Junior Member | He is healty and active. She was bred with a donkey, so now we own a mule. He is very cute. I was rather unprepared for him until that day. I had to vet out to do a float on my other horse and he took one look at her and said "yeah she's pregnant, problably won't deliver for a couple of weeks" She ended up having him that night. I had to redo my fencing because I was afraid he'd roll underneath it. But all is well now. I want to let me other mare in with them, but I think I'll wait a few days to do that. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments or advice on letting other mares out the the mom and baby? Last edited by indy; 08-19-2006 at 06:27 PM. |

| Senior Member | Congrats of your baby, I would give them a couple of weeks alone together to bond and get use to each other. I kept my mare alone with her baby for the first 2 weeks just to make sure baby was strong enough to run with mama if need be. |

I keep the mare and baby in a smaller pasture with a sturdy fence until the little one is about a month old. Then I introduce 1 or 2 of the calmest horses into the small pasture for a few days before letting them all out together in the bigger pastures. Most mares are good about keeping other horses away from their baby and most horses won't mess with an angry mare protecting her baby. |
