Are there truly no antibodies left after a mare had it 3 times the previous year? Kathy, do you know how much retained resistance titres show on an aged broodmare?

The problem with the vaccine is that it isn't effective for more than a couple months, hence the need to vaccinate at 5, 7 and 9 months. It is why it is recommended that in "hot" areas and if your mare hasn't foaled by 11 months, vaccinate again. Research shows that it just doesn't have the longevity to maintain the mare's resistance as in other vaccines. Frustrating.

Hope that helps!

I used to vaccinate years ago but quit 16 years back. I have 10 to 15 foals a year and never had a problem since I quit vaccinating so I've just never seen asny reason to fix whats not broken. I know a number of breeders in the area and none vaccinate with the exception of two. If it were a known problem in this area I'd certainly do it.

No kickbacks for my vets, I buy and give my own shots. I'm way too busy to be waiting around the farm all day just for them to swing by to give a shot.

What part of the country do you live in? So let me get this right... you did not vaccinate for anything? What type of horse do you breed?

In my experience, the best way to slow down a runaway horse is to bet on it...

AH okay... yes I agree... I have not done that since the year we had the problem... I also have a friend that had lost two or three foals due to rhino but all those times it was caused by a strain the vaccine did not cover. So I think it is a breeders choice thing.
