Pregnant Mare Urine.

Mares that are bred so their pee can be collected to make hormone supplements for menopausal women.

This is Shawnee,
She was a 7 month old PMU when I got her. This was her at two.
Now she was very sick at 7 months, and need about 6 months worth
of medical care to get her back to proper health.
But now she is the most wonderful horse ever. This is her a 3.

No they do not produce near that many foals, and no thousands are NOT sent to slaughter. PMU only creates 6,000 foals/year, and most of them are well bred, registered and sold privately.

Personally I would never adopt a PMU foal through a PMU rescue organization. They are scams that charge far too much for the foals, and try to say that the foals are in danger when they are not. The rescues are the only reason why the very few PMU farmers who breed irresponisbly can continue breeding that way, because they always have somewhere to dump the foals. To me it's like supporting puppy mills by buying puppies at a pet store.

Our rescue took her in from a woman who has pruchased her directy from the farmer but she still was in bad shape and skin that never grew back on her legs (from Hobbles im guessing)

At one point the PMU foals were in desperate need of homes and saving. But they have founda new way to harvest the hormones and their numbers have gone down a lot. But even before that happened the farmers wised up and started buying nice lined stallions and registered mares only for their herds and then they sell the foals locally and whatever cannot be sold is usually sent off as a "rescue". There are not many foals left who really need rescuing. Lots are draft crosses which are popular so people buy them, others are bred for color and registerable. The farmers make double the money that way, some by selling the PMU and some by selling the foals. Very few PMU's go to slaughter anymore if any. Now this is not to say that there may not be some PMU foals out there who don't need help or rescuing (ironically enough some of these foals come from "Rescues" who are saving them from slaughter but end up selling them for $1000 a pop even in bad condition).

Its hard to save a PMU foal without supporting the industry they come from anymore because its so over publicized now and if you can find a good PMU foal who really does need a good home I urge you to get them. But if you really want to do this as a means of rescuing a foal of some sort... I would recommend going to a local killer auction and buying an unbroke horse who is going through because the owner just wants fast cash (and with the market how it is now there are a lot of good horses who have nthing wrong with them other than being young and unbroke going through the meat gates). You would be saving a life there and a horse like that horse is at far greater risk of ending up in slaughter and it would likely cost you less and be less of a hassle to get the horse. Now not all killers will buy a young horse to kill, some will break train and turn around and sell. But from waht I hear at the auctions lately they cant make much money that way anymore because prices are so bad and most no longer bother trying to turn a horse for cash.
