I'm not saying every single barn is perfect, however there are tight regulations regarding the care these horses get. Barns get shut down for abusing their animals. Please look at the link I posted.

It would not have been hobbles that injured the horse's skin. It would have been from the boots, I am guessing the farmer did not change/clean the boots everyday or exercise his mares like they LEGALLY have to do. Your friend should be calling the authorities on this barn.

My aunt and uncle owned a PMU barn before the massive shut downs a few years ago, I also worked in another one for 4 years. My dad is a farrier and trimmed at PMU barns in the area, I have been in about 15 barns and personally know most of the owners of them. I know the laws and legalities of it

Personally I would never adopt a PMU foal through a PMU rescue organization. They are scams that charge far too much for the foals, and try to say that the foals are in danger when they are not. The rescues are the only reason why the very few PMU farmers who breed irresponisbly can continue breeding that way, because they always have somewhere to dump the foals. To me it's like supporting puppy mills by buying puppies at a pet store.

This is where I got that information:

I suppose it could be old. I just was looking for more info on PMU's as I had never even heard of it until about 2 months ago...

I have a Thoroughbred/ Percheron cross ex PMU foal named Minot. We adopted her through www.pmufani.com from a horrible, blurry picture of her walking around in the snow. She came down from a farm up in Minot, North Dakota with 4 other paint yearling colts who were going to Florida. She ended up being FULL of every kind of worm on earth and was very skinny.

She is now almost 4 years old and is about 16.1+ hands. She is like a big dog, temperament wise. She is on the lazy side of the spectrum, but is ironically a pretty graceful mover. I have lunged her over trotting poles and have gone over a small crossrail with her before, and she is a very graceful mover for her size. I hope to show in hunter under saddle classes with her in the summer.

Here is a video of her progress that I took last summer:
Here is one of her that I took in early March of her playing in the roundpen: http://media.putfile.com/Minot-Lungeing

And a small one of me riding her: http://media.putfile.com/Riding-Minot
