PMU foal pros and cons?

My husband wants a draft horse and would like to get one by giving a PMU foal a home.

I just wanted some info as well as pros and cons to PMU foals...

I don't know about the foals, but we got a pmu mare. She is a little rough around the edges, but she has so far turned out to be a nice horse. I have thought about adopting one as well.

PMU stands for Pregnant Mare Urine. They use it to make Premarin which is a hormone replacement drug for menopausaul women.

PMU horses are mares that are bred so that a farmer can collect the urine. The urine is use to make premarin which is a drug issued to women going through menopause. The result of PMU farming is a large amount of foals that need to find homes. I think I heard a number around 70,000 foal last year were born through PMU farming.

They are horses that farms have and they keep these mares bred so they can collect their urine. That urine is used to make the hormone stated up above. Now theses horses are being sold or adopted because that hormone can be made synthetically. So, they don't need the pmu horses anymore. These horses are based out of Canada. There are several people that are "drop stations" for these horses in the states. They have already sent thousands of horses to slaughter here in the us.

I think if you have the time and the resources, then it is a good idea. Several of these horses are of show quality. We have a bucskin mare we adopted. She is registered bucskin now and we are working on getting the info. to register her with AQHA. She is a nice mare. She just needs work.

As far as PMU foals go, just like anything else, can be good or bad. You must have experience on how to handle a foal that has had very little human contact. Since they are young, it doesn't seem long to get them to trust you. You need a lot of patience and a kind voice and soft hand to start. I know of a couple people that have PMU foals and some are wonderful, behaved yearlings, but I know of two that are somewhat uncontrollable even though a lot of time has been spent into working with them. I think alot of PMU rescues have chats or discussions where you can contact current PMU owners. I would recommend checking that out.
