Please take a look at this Skys Blue Boy baby for me.

Hi, guys. Just wanted some opinions on this filly. I know the shot doesn't give you much to work with, but tell me if you see anything glaring. I love the pedigree. I leased a young Luke at Me gelding a few years ago and loved him - very level headed. Have any of you had experience with the Skys Blue Boy babies?
Does it look like she's going to be bay or brown instead of gray?

UPDATE: OK, her equine.com ad has been disabled. Here is the sale page they have on their Web site.

The comments below address possible distortion in the pics. I don't think they're distorted because nothing else on the site is. I think if she's going to be 17 hh, she would about have to look like that right now. I am going to try to look at this mare later this month. Really would like your opinions, guys.

I like her head a lot -- quite pretty and feminine looking. In terms of other things, it is difficult to tell given the shot. What I would be worried about is the front pasterns. I actually opened the ad a few times because I was worried that my computer was distorting the picture! I would definitely ask for better shots of the legs.

Personally, I prefer my quarter horses to have a little bit more bone in their legs. She is definitely going to be a big girl (height wise) and already looks pretty substantial in the body, but her legs seem very fine with quite small hooves ... I guess this could or could not have an impact on her long-term soundness and career depending on what you were planning on using her for.

I also don't know what the market is like in Georgia, but I have seen some nice show quality weanlings and yearlings going for $2 - $4,000 here in the Midwest. To me, $8,000 seems a little bit on the pricey side.

But, I do think she is cute. I would just want more pictures before heading out to see her or moving further in the process ...

Thank you for looking! It's funny you should say you thought the pic might be distorted because the ones on their actual Web site are quite distorted, and I thought this one might be slightly so, as well. I see your concern about the pasterns. I would like to see more photos. I'm guessig the $8,000 stems mostly from her pedigree. Just from the comparison shopping I've done, it looks like the SBB name bumps that price up .

I am not great on confo, but she is a gray. My trainer has a 3 or 4 yo gray HUS mare with similar coloring.

The picture has been enlarged, I can see the pixelation, but I don't think the ratio has been skewed at all. The picture of the horse does look distorted, but if you look at the background it doesnt look stretched or shrunken at all. So I dunno.

I think that since she appears to have a short back and a lack of a hip, it makes the overall appearance seem distorted. As a weanling her legs don't look too delicate, but as a yearling they do though.

There are two SBB horses at the barn, a brown & a bucksin. The brown is a mare that is 16 hh (small compared to most HUS these days) but has done very well. Placed top ten at the AQHA world, youth world & congress (multiple times). They paid over $50k for this mare as a 5 or 6 yo. She is a little quirky, which from my understanding the SBB mares can be, though - she doesn't like other horses at all. The buckskin is a gelding who is still a JR horse this year. He has had some issues (EPM), so he has limited showing, but when he is at his best is a great mover. He is a little more bigger boned/bodied then the mare who has a more TB look to her.

Take a look at some of SBB offspring to get a better idea.

The second horse (brown mare) is the one at my trainers.

Thanks so much for looking. I do think her legs are very long and slender. She is 20 months. I can only hope she will grow into them. I guess I'm more worried about major conformational no-nos (over at the knee, which I don't think she is - things that are going to be major problems later on). What if she doesn't grow into those legs?

It is always a tough situation to critique a baby -- and it is even tougher in a situation like this when you know that you like the breeding and maybe the barn that she is coming from. Does this color someone's perception of the horse that they are considering?

What I would recommend is trying to talk to some of your friends and acquaintances. Show them her picture without any information on her breeding or where she is coming from. Ask them what would be their impression if they saw this horse in a sales barn or at an auction ...

In terms of her legs, I think that she will definitely grow into them length-wise. She is undoubtedly going to be a big (!!!) girl. But, she is always going to be a little bit light of bone in the legs, at least in my opinion. Will this be a problem in the long-term? Maybe/maybe not ... I think a lot of it will depend on what you want to use her for. As Luv2Lope mentioned a lot of what people see when they look at the legs is affected by her lack of hip in the pictures. Work and muscling will help fill the hip out to some degree, but I don't think she will ever have the look of having a "powerful engine" in the back. This would not concern me too much, except for the fact that she is already pretty muscled up through her shoulder -- so it becomes a question of balance, both for performance and visually if you ever had planned to show her in hand.

In terms of major conformational issues, the only real concern that I have are her front pasterns in one of the photos -- I think it was the second one. But, her pasterns definitely looked better in the weanling picture, so it may just be a growth stage that she is going through right now ...

And I also agree with Luv2Lope, looking at her color right now I definitely see grey ...

Good luck with your decision on her and I hope that you really like her when you go out to see her!

I think she is just in a really awkward yearling hunt seater stage. I do think her pasterns are a bit to be concerned about, but I don't think anything else is really too bad.. just an awkward stage.

I know/have ridden a few Skys Blue Boys. Some can be a bit quirky, but most of the ones I've known have been great. A lot of it comes from the mare too though, and Luke At Mes are kinda similar... there certainly are some bad ones but also lots of great ones.

Thanks so much to all who looked. I am still in the considering stages on this filly. I do agree she's in an awkward stage. No doubt she'll be pretty. Just wanted your feedback in the event there were any major, major red flags. I would, of course, have her vetted before buying her, and will show her to my trainer.
