Question Pitting Edema ?

The only cure for Sophies Edema is having her baby. I know walking helps, I was wondering what problems you can run into with this fluid retention on their bellies.

This picture shows it very well

My mare had edema really bad. The vet said it was the worst he had ever seen. It was swollen like your mares all the way up threw her front legs and into her chest! He gave her a shot, I cant remember what it was called I'll try to find out. (didn't help to much) she had the foal a week later and her edema went away instantly. She was able to be out on pasture with the freedom to move around, but she would stand in her favorite spot and just pout. I hand walked her everyday.

haha most of the friesians and some of the other chunkyer breeds get the edema as a 2-3inch wall, never has it caused any proublem

That's good to hear. Not sure what difference it had. I know it's almost the same thing (i think) as when a woman is pregnant and starts getting a lot of fluid retention later on in pregnancy. Difference is that I would have to get off of my feet to get the swelling to go down. Crazy stuff.

I dont worry about edema. However I have looked at the pics of your mare several times. I hate to say this, but there are bells going off in my head. Please Google a few things, if you interested in learning more, I will gladly talk(phone), IM, PM or email. Or even post here.

Google - Hydrops (might need to add equine, mare, horse). There is not much info on it online. Without seeing the mare in person, its hard to tell from pics.

Also, where are you located? Over a year and lack of milk sounds like fescue. Look up fescue toxicity in horses. Its grass thats found in most parts of the USA and for a normal horse its fine and dandy, but for a bred mare it can wreck havoc. Like prolonged gestation, lack of milk, etc.

Hydrops is very rare. I just really dont like the way she is carrying. It makes me nervous. I have debated about saying anything since hydrops is so rare. I doubt thats what the funny shape is (Yes, I can see the edema too) but I figure it doesnt hurt to bring it up, just in case. Its hard to even find good info on it online. I am on the hunt for a very good, informative article on both hydrops and fescue. Fescue is easy, hydrops is not.

Looking at your mares udder shots, she isnt ready, but looking at gestation length and body......she should have foaled already. What about her vulva? Has it elongated yet (gone soft and looks like a floppy....um, something?)

Guys just gpt bacl on here but to me this just isn't looking right. However nothing much you can do. Solsalia I hate to say this but this is EXACTLY what Annie looked like the first day of her rupture. and this is pretty much what she looks like now. Has the vet looked at this? As long as Sophie keeps walking that is great! However if for any reason she stops I would be highly concernd! Annie literally went from walking to the round pen which is only 45 feet away to couldn't walk back to her stall. I would just watch her VERYCLOSELY! I don't want you to end up in my shoes!!! My thoughts and prayers are with you!
Ignoring the pouch at the flank of Annie's side all of what you are seeing is minor edema and torn muscle. It runs from her chest to her udder. I will take some better pictures tonight so it might help you!

I hate repeating my self but the friesians at our barn did get the wall of edema that was 2-3inchs and some times 4inchs, with no issues.

Well BOP don't repeat yourself but not all horses are the same. I saw what you said and I have seen horses get edema that thick too and foal safely but that didn't go along with vet checks and worried owners. I don't know what's going on in Sophie's case but it's better Solsalia be infomed and know what could and might be her options. I hate to say it but I just kinda had to give a negative side about it. When a mare has carried as long as she has and start getting edema that quick and thus late I would be quite concernd. However i think I remember Solsalia saying that Sophie's going to the vet tomorrow to be watched? That's great for all of them! She can get much needed rest and Sophie and foal are in good hands! I have seen mare with edema that end up not being able to push from it therefore people have had to pull foals. I am just throwing out some thoughts that need to be known for this situation. Solsalia please keep us informed!

Agreed I just dont want to send her into a panic attack. That can be the worse thing for the mare are people around her who are mentaly unstable in some way or another, or cant confort her because of their fears
