| Full Member | Piriton for Sweet Itch
Has anyone heard of giving piriton (anti-histamine) tablets to a horse to help manage sweet itch. My friend reccommened it to me and told me lots of her friends did it too. These are the tablets you can get over the counter at the pharmacy (the same ones are given to dogs, horses and humans!) So have any of you tried this, If so do they work and how many do you give? (I have heard of people giving 1 a day and other 20 a day!!) any since my dog gas 1 per day I was confused on how 1 per day could work on a horse?! Thankyou Alex

We gave up on our mare with sweet itch and bought the blanket. Best decision ever. It can be a pain, but gosh does it work. Better than anything oral the vets have ever given us. We also tried all the fandangled all natural remedies... nothing. Invest in the blanket. |

My vet prescribed me human antihistamines for my mare when she had a skin irritation and I had to give her 20 tablets twice a day (she did rattle for a while but it stopped the itching) the dose that would be required would vary from horse to horse so it is worth having a chat to your vet about it but yes human antihistamines do work! I would also weigh up the costs of using antihistamines against buying her a new rug designed for sweet itch as they can really have a remarkable effect on it. |

thankyou yeh might be heading that way, but his scratching isn't thattt bad, and he really hates rugs and up until this year he never has any rugs at all, and he's 20! but yehh, i bought an expensive sweet itch hood, from snuggly hoods, but i'm worried he will overheat in it, and i need to buy a rug to accompany it, so it doesnt fall off.

The sweetitch rugs are designed to allow airflow to the body as the majority of us need to use them when the weather is hotter so don't worry about your boy overheating...........believe me he will soon get used to the rug and the relief he would feel would be amazing, think how itchy it is for us to get one bite from an insect and then imagine that all over your body, it must be soooooo irritating for a horse.
