Unhappy Pictures of Mocha's wound - Day 5 *Pretty gross...*

Well I finally made myself take a couple of shots of Mocha's leg when I went to the Clinic today to help contain the unruly beast that was my sweet filly no more than a week ago. We had to sedate her twice just to clean and redress her leg. Man Rompun wears off fast with her...But at least its looking better, it should be granulating soon by how things are going the vet said which is good news. She's loosing weight though, hopefully she doesn't keep loosing. The vet said that its probably better that she's a little on the lean side since she's really not expending any energy whatever. Any thoughts on that?

Well here it is...sorry I couldn't get a better shot and that its blurry, it was a quick snapshot while the vet was getting the happy drugs. On the right where it looks more swollen is where the artery is severed, the left and front are actually doing pretty well and there's no damage on the back of her pastern thankfully.

It looks pretty ugly but its healing. Lots of healthy pink flesh there now. Still crossing our fingers though.

Poor baby. Thank goodness she has a mom like you! What happened to her to cause the injury?

Luckily, I have only ever had one that needed to be treated... My blind mare reared up and came down on my appy gelding, gashing his chest REALLY deep. It looked awful. It was about 8 inches wide, 3-4 inches deep and gaped open 3-4 inches. I kept him in a tie stall for four days, washing it out with cold water four times a day and applying antibiotic. On the 5th day I washed and dried it, and started applying Alu-coat. I swear, in 6 weeks there was NO SCAR. I got SO lucky.

Leg injuries are so frightening. Good luck to both of you!

I'm sure Mocha wouldn't agree with you right now, the vet tonight made me do the quilt and polo so she might not hate him so much. But thanks! I'm trying to do my best with this, never had an injury like this before ever.

We're 90% sure a snowmobiler cut a section of our poly rope fence that runs in the big pasture (we only use it in the summer) and the slack brought the line in the smaller pasture down. She got wrapped up in it and did what you see there. That's the short story, but if you wanted to read more there are a few previous ones in the health section about it.

Sorry to hear about your gelding though!! Wow...its amazing how fast they can both hurt themselves and heal sometimes isn't it? Frustrating...but amazing.

Leaner is better on a layup so I agree with your vet. If it were me I would be supplementing her. Is she on antibotics? Probios and a good multivit too keep her going strong. Rompem tends to not work well with alot of noise around and I won't give it to a horse that tends to be a kicker. Mixed up in a cocktail with ace it works best.

She is on antibiotics still. She just finished up her last dose of IV antibiotics (Gentamicin I think...) on saturday thankfully. She does have the usual salt lick and loose mineral always out for her, but I was thinking of getting her something else. I'll ask the vet about the probios for sure.

But thankfully the back of the clinic is very very quiet and so far she hasn't had any bad reaction, she really just zones out.

I can honestly say while I am NOT squeamish in the least, this wound was pretty nasty to look at the first few days. It looked as deep as it looks wide now up until Saturday when the swelling finally came down and things started to get back to somewhat normal.

But thanks! Its good to know it is looking ok, and I'm not just being overly positive.
