| Senior Member | Picking your brains on training...for reining
I'm just looking for some excesizes to get my 2 year old ready for training next year. he is rather short so he's only had 3 rides by a small rider. I have him super light on the reins and will do small roll back on the ground. I never really went through direct reining Ive done most of his work with just neck reining but he did get the basics on direct reining but I wanted to get him solid in direct reining. he is pretty heavy on the forhand any ideas on getting him balenced. to the right he's almost perfect and Ive been working him more to the left but he doesnt seem to be really moving balenced to the left. he head bobs at the canter to the left for balence. but yeah any excersizes that can help prepare him for reining that I can do over winter would be great

Really, at this level of training, just some basics, serpentines, half halts.... will help keep the front end light, circling, leg yielding, etc. Any variation of small circle, straight line, large circle, where you circle small at one corner of the arena, ride the straight line and circle large, or do large figure eights, will help prepare the horse for more advanced moves. Regulating speed and stride length, encouraging the head and neck to be level with no movement by sitting deep and moving with the horse and keeping the hands still and quiet, encouraging rythmic movement with song or music are also possible at this stage. I would reserve roll backs and such for later in the trianing, but teaching to move away from the leg and encouraging the horse to bend around the inside leg can be done.

I agree with sorrel, lots of flexing and bending at low speeds. Keep it simple. With only 3 rides, they generally have NO balance at all at any speed. They're still trying to figure out what that person is doing on their back, they surely haven't figured out how to keep centered to keep that extra weight over their center of gravity. We never worry about balance until they have at least 90 days of solid consistent training. And even then we don't worry too much until they're 90 days into their 3 yr old year. If you rush the training the horse will blow up and will either break down mentally or physically. |

lol. i think I must of typed it wrong ...he's not been ridden after the three rides which were all walk and trot. its on the lunge he's unbalenced to the left and I'd like to get him more balenced there before I put a rider on him again. I cant ride in the winter and I'd just like some excersizes i can do with him in an indoor at the local barn.

lol well this colt Ive had his whole life. he's been round penned, lunge lined and ground driven since he was a yearling. he's been desensitized to anything that flaps, squeeks, rustles, jingles, screetches, jerks and falls. ive done elevated ground poles, he's just starting on lunging with loose side reins. he's very soft on the mouth and very supple in his body. I just dont want to bore him to death since he is the kind to get bored. he's smart and easilly interested in anything NEW. I need some new ideas lol. im fresh out.

Ask the trainer you propose to send him to. ESPECIALLY if you plan to let him stay there until his futurity year (if thats what you're doing.) Most trainers would rather start with a blank canvas than have to re-do or un-do other peoples riding.

well I havent found any local trainers that I want to send him to. also futurity year? I dont know much about showing in reining or any of the perks and tearms and the like. Ive done mostly WP riding and showing an even then its all small time. I just want him to have a job her likes. Ive been watching and such and he just wont cut it in WP. so reining I think will be his thing as he shows talent for it so we shall see. since you all seem to have a better idea of reining than I do. what do you guys like to see in your 2 year old reiners? Lee is, always on the correct leads, he is quick on his feet, willing to please, a little lazy, moves easilly from pressure and is getting to be pretty well collected on the lunge (im working on his left side)

One of the more succesful trainers that I know uses a thing that he calls a fork. It is made out of metal rod and ties over the saddle. The ends are padded and tied to the stirups. There is a handle on each side. It is used to represent a riders leg and foot. You can push or pull to put pressure on the horse in the same place where a leg or foot would. This is to teach the horse to give to pressure but not to lead. He also uses a hockey bag with sand in it that he keeps adding a bit at a time. (Half of the sand goes on each side). The reins are also tied to the horn and by grabing them behind the chin he can apply neck reining pressure by pulling forward a bit then push or pull so that you get the required forward movement that is needed. I have never tried to buy his stuff and he has not tried to sell it to me. His youngsters are well on their way before he steps on for the first time. I have not seen any sticks!
