| Senior Member | People Should KNow where there horse is going when they sell it!
Hey everyone. I am little upset. I know this girl that goes to my school, we have been talking because we are both interested in horses. She was always complaining about how crazy her horse is, that she cant ride it. But she never has taken lessons. She has a horse because her mom grew up with them, and supposedly she knows a lot about them. She doesnt know anything about horses. She doesnt know what breed her horse is, how old he is(not even if he is young or old), what equtation, now even what hands are (how they are measured)!! Well anyway, what upset me was that today she told me she sold him, and that some guy was picking him up. The guy hadnt even SEEN the horse, and that they had talked on the phone and that he was picking him up today and paying them 500 cash. Under these circumstances I am sure that it is a meat buyer. I just wish that certain people didnt have horses, or at least were forced to take lessons or something! I mean even if she saids she cant ride the horse, it is probably her fault because she didnt know how to deal with him, and from what she told me he seems like a young horse. I am upset, I dont think horses should have to suffer, because of people that just dont know anything about them! |

Well, there are people who could care less. This is unfortunate, but it would be a better situation than possibly being neglected or abused in their current situation....

It's people like that , when I feel bad for what the horses have to put up with. Horses don't deserve so called owners like that and people like that don't deserve horses. I don't know how they can do it with feeling compasion for the horse.

I know its just horrible. I couldnt even imagine not being compationate to a horse, even if I just knew him for a few minutes. I dont see how you could spend time with a horse and treat it like an object instead of a lie animal. And she jsut talks so easly about getting a new horse, not even acting like she is going to miss the horses she is selling. Its just do said, I wish I could protect horses from people like that!

I'm with you sister!! People like that think horses are just objects and that they are simply their owners when the sad thing is no horse has an owner but it can choose to have a friend. My heart leaps at the sight of horse, even when I see a horse I miss him/her even if I only got to see them! |

Just wanted to add in that just because one person hasn't taken lessons, doesn't mean they don't know how to handle a horse. (Although in this situation she doesnt know how to ride or handle probably) Many people have never had a professional riding lesson but can handle a horse better than a seasoned professional. So don't put her down just because she's never had a lesson. As for not knowing who the horse went to, in some situations it is in the family's best interest that they don't. I owned a mare who became so agressive and dangerous that in the end we really didn't care who she went to (as long as it wasn't a kid or anything). We just needed her off our property and out of our lives. It sounds harsh, but when my safety and well being is at risk, aswell as my family's, then this animal needs to go. Perhaps that could be the same situation? I mean, I understand why your upset - and in an ideal world everyone would stay in contact with their old horses and there would be no slaughter. Saddly, this isn't a perfect world - and it's a shame where some of these wonderful horses end up

I have know idea what the slaughter houses or paying in MI, but here the horse would have to weigh almost 1500 lbs for him to make his money back. So it may not have went where you think. No, I have never sent any there, when to old to be used they go to my sisters and spend the rest of there time on 1300 acres of green grass, streams and trees. I do agree some people should never own a horse or any other pet as far as that goes. |
