Penny Conformation

I took conformation pictures of Penny for another thread Two warmblood stallions - conformation of mare added but I might as well put them here, too. I know she is lacking muscle tone, but that is due to a lack of work due to a minor injury she got playing in a turn-out, falling over, getting up again, and bucking some more. Silly mare. Also, do you think she is worthy of passing on herself in the form of a colt or filly?

Haha, that's me in the red shirt

I love this mare

Neck is a little lowset, but nothing that would make me go "ewww". I'd just want to make sure I bred her to a stallion with a nice, higher neck set and who was known for passing that on. Nice saddle position - withers nice, not too sharky, not set too far back. Nice deep girth too. Her shoulder is a little steep, but I also see long toes on the front feet, and I think getting those taken care of might give you a little more slope to her shoulder. She won't have a hugely sloped shoulder, but I think it will slope a little more.

Nice lenght of neck and pretty, feminine head Pretty clean throatlatch too. Nice back length and loin connection. Looks athletic. As I stated on your other thread, her hip is approaching what I consider too steep, but it's not all that bad, and one of the reasons I recommended the particular stallion for her. Nice gaskin - could be a bit more muscled, but I think it's pretty good for a TB. It looks a little long, but not bad. Ditto on the forearm.

She looks a LITTLE light in her hind cannons, but it's nothing that makes me run the other way, considering her not-heavy body type. Her front cannons look abou the same way, but I can't see one front leg well enough to tell for sure. Again, just a LITTLE light, but not out of proportion light to her overall bone.

Her front legs are nice and straight, both from the side and the front. I like the spread between them, a lot. Her hind legs are nice from behind too. From the side they look to be a little straight, but not terribly bad. Pasterns all around look to be a good length.

I just really realy like her

Psssh, that's only because she's not some fancy warmblood. "Just" a thoroughbred.

She's totally adorable, and even though I don't know crud about confo, I'm sure everything JBandRio said is 100% right.

Sadly, I think there is some truth in what you are saying with her being "just" a thoroughbred. It was always weird to me, when I lessoned in the advanced one. I was always the only person on a thoroughbred. The next most TB horse in that lesson is Ed, my other horse. Personally, I enjoy the sensitivity of thoroughbreds and crosses very the numb clunkiness I feel when on a true warmblood.

I totally agree. I can't say I've ridden many warmbloods, except when Foxfield was trying to convince me to lease one of their show horses and had me riding all their WBs, but my TB mare is the most sensitive horse I've EVER ridden. Yeah that may be a bad thing sometimes, but it makes you super light with your aids and makes you be perfect! I'd much rather have it that way than have to really get after the horse to listen....

I'm sorry, I never really liked the atmosphere at Elvenstar. People have their nasty, mean warmbloods (like that buckskin in the box stall over by the tack rooms) and will point their noses up at sweet, talented horses like Penny! (And Doogie for that matter, but he's too fat for anyone to have ever thought he was a pure TB)

Haha, that buckskin is a quarter horse. Her name is Duet and she is just a bit territorial about her stall. And I do agree with you that the environment at Elvenstar is a bit... whacked. I'm just there because the trainers are all amazing. Some days it's just get in, ride, get out simply cause I don't want to deal with the people there. Jim, the main trainer at Elvenstar, actually prefers thoroughbreds since they were the kind of horse he knew growing up. He wants more TBs in the ring jumping the bigger stuff, but the kids tend to like the ones that look prettier and more like the My Little Ponies they had when they were little.

Haha, Michelle told me Duet was a warmblood. Oops! She was really nasty to me the one time I tried to pet her, haha.

Warmbloods are liked around because they're expensive and big, and because they *typically* tend to be easier to handle than TBs. God, I remember trying to show this gelding I was leasing at Foxfield. I was NEVER in the same leagues as the girls riding their push-button, dead-headed warmbloods, and here I was on this big, lanky 17.1h TB gelding who'd spook at a dandelion seed floating in the air, and would yank his head down because he'd figured out how to yank my little 5'3, 14 year old body out of the saddle. Yeah, I still placed in one class once. I'd like to see any of them try to even ride that horse. They wouldn't know what to do with themselves. Grr.

Hmm... that horse seems a bit of a problem. Luckily Penny doesn't spook. And she is very easy to handle. On the ground after being off for four months, she's still the same way she acted when she was in full work. Ed, on the other hand, will prance and buck on the leadrope after not being out for three days.

I don't bother in Eq or Hunter classes with either of them since neither of them are the calmest things in the world undersaddle.
