Pelleted wood ( for pellet stove ) being used as bedding.

Anybody ever or are you using pelleted wood used for wood stoves for bedding?

I've seen lately people buying wood stove pellets for bedding. It runs $179.00 a ton (50 - 40# bags). That run $3.58 a 40# bag.

It's made out of compressed sawdust.

Looking around the web a pelleted bedding products, some are being made by companies that make other wood products.

What do you think?

Why would you use that instead of a pelleted bedding? Is there any difference aside from the chemicals added to the bedding to keep ammonia down?

People seem to be cutting costs. Wood stove pellets are just compressed sawdust.

That's about the same price that pelleted beddings run though. What I used to buy was 3.50 a bag.

Generic pelleted is running 3.79-3.99 a bag. Woody Pet much higher about $5.25 a bag. Talking to a local Agway dealer they are buying their bedding through a broker, supplier and they have been raising it every so often once they get the people hooked.

There sometimes is the feeling that horse people will pay the extra cost. The people using the stove pellets seem to be statisfied. Saw a ton, pallet of pellets loaded today for a stable.

We happen to use straw at our stable. I've been asked more than a few times at work about using stove pellets for bedding.

I was referring to Woody Pet in my previous post. Perhaps it's just that cheap in this area? I don't know.

We used a product similar to woody pet and it cost $6.00 a bag. It was great stuff, but we couldn't justify the cost. It was over twice as much for the winter season as shavings.

Don't know about the wood stove pellets. Would have to do some research. Have to be careful about black walnut and other types of wood that may be in the pellets made for burning.

The woody pet only cost us about 50 cents more a bag than shavings. It took about 5-7 bags to start a stall out, but then after that, it was only about 1 1/2 bags per stall a month.
