that's a good sign that she's been bred, right? I'll have my vet out next month to check her, but if she hasn't come back into heat doesn't that usually mean she's bred? That's what I've read and heard, at least. I'll need lots of advice if she is, this will be our first foal! :-) Is there anything I need to do for her this early?

Yes, normally that is correct. At this stage, just be sure she remains healthy and has a good diet. At about 3-4 months before due date there are more things that should be done.

If you are planning on vaccinating with Rhino it should be done at 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation. If you are waiting another month to check for pregnancy you are running the risk of not find twins...just something to consider. As a rule I have mine checked at day 14 to look for twins, checked again at day 30 and again at 60. That is just the schedule that I follow. Good luck with your first foal.

Not always and it is a risk I am not willing to take. I had 2 mares end up with twins last year. We caught both of them at 14 days and pinched one off. They both carried the remaining foal to term just fine. You can hope nature will take care of itself but it is not always going to do so. When was the last breeding date for your mare?

My old barn managers mare was having twins. I don't remember how far along the mare was, but they had hair and were full foals. She went into early labor and come to find out, the one in back was still born and was being aborted by the mare. The only way for her body to get the dead one out was to birth the alive one early. This was on a cold winter night and they lost both...

The week of April 22nd. She was pasture bred so I'm sure of the exact date of the last breeding.
