Post Pasture question

Currently we are keeping my horse at my brother-in-laws farm down the road. We have thought of moving her here (to our house)next spring. In order to do that we thought we would fence off part of our lawn. We have a large lawn and the area that we would fence off is well over 2 acres. Hubby uses a tractor to mow it all. In another post the subject of grass came up. Can I turn this lawn into a pasture or do I need to improve it somehow? It would help to know this so we can plan for spring.

My friend has pature like that and she has never had any problems after mowing. She waits a couple of days though after mowing to turn out and they only get out for about an hour. Will your horse be on it all the time? If so, I would gradually introduce the grass to him for short periods at a time. After that, you may not even need to mow it if he is in it all the time except for in heavy rainy season Hope this helps...

To make it eisier i would fence off the 2 acres and also a smaller area inside the 2 acres. Make that small area dirt (does not need to be very big). In this area you can either put a barn or run in shed (which ever you prefer) That way you have somewhere to put him while your introducing grass. Hope this helps.

Yes, we are going to build a small 2 (box)stall barn so we would be able to put him in it while he gets used to the grass. We plan to divide the area into two pasture so that we can rotate and have a round training pen in the center. She will be on it all of the time once she gets used to the grass. How gradually do you think I need to introduce it? 20 minutes for a couple days and work on up from that?

That sounds about right. You could even go 30 minutes. Better to be overcautious than to have a sick baby
