Unfortunatly you will need to take away the problem like the hay thing esp if its realy designed for cattle. Equine hay rings do not have the top rung on them like cattle ones do.
You can do the serpentine but it begins to pull and the horse is more likely to rub because of the sensation. I use braids that are about 1 1/2 inch thick and you can leave the braids mid way down the braid itself to help in them not getting caught up. I used to do that occasionaly. Just braid the section of hair half way down and bind with a rubber band and let the bottom half just hang like a pony tail.

Healthy Hair Care products are good products. You can try a mane bag but I wont guarantee that they wont get caught also. Have you tried MTG?

Could you use a sleazy? Or sometimes they have things called "mane tamers".

I don't like metal feeders where they can rub their mane's off. My pipe corral panels the horses will stick their heads through and rub their necks, it drives me nuts.
