panicky new mom 2be

Hello,

I have a mare that was bred sometime between 6/16 and 7/16 of last year. She is getting fairly large and bagged up and started to wax a few weeks ago. Then her bag shrank back down and the wax went away a few days ago. Now it looks like she is bagging up again. This is making me nuts since I am not sure how close she is to her due date. Is this type of thing normal? Anything else I should be watching for? I have been watching for the muscles in her hind quarters to get very soft but aside from that I am not sure what signs to look for.

My other question is - anyone have any idea as to what color you get when you cross a chocolate palomino with a tricolor paint? This is a pre-pregnancy picture of her.

Vets have always told me "2 weeks befor, 2 weeks after, all on time". Due to your breeding dates, she should be due mid May to mid June. My mare bagged up 1st of April. Due April 5-8, Still no foal. I would not worry too much. If you are really worried, have your vet out to ultrasound her to get a better idea of fetal development. It just might give you the general idea of when she is offically due. No garantees thou, my mare is almost a month late and we are still waiting even thou she has been dripping milk for 2 days. Good luck and happy foaling!

The udder size will go up and down during the day, usually smaller after exercise, and fills up as they are standing around.

I would love to see a picture of your baby when it arrives, sounds like it should be anytime.

My mare dropped and bagged up, but not hugely the night before she foaled. She didn't get really loose and jiggly in the hindquarters, either. Every mare is a little different, as long as you see baby movement and the mare doesn't appear to be stressing, I wouldn't worry too much. If you are worried, give your vet a call.
