Palomino vs. Red Dun....take a look

Well Halo is a red dun but I've been thinking a lil . I know that some babies lose their dorsal stripes and while she has one, it's not as distinct as 'Nick's and so I'm wondering if it's going to dissapear. I doubt it will but if it does, would she be a pally? Her coat's really golden and her dam has thrown a pally before so the genetics are all there. I mean, besides the dorsal, what's the real diff?

If she does not have a White/Flaxen mane and tail, she's not a Palomino. Also, one parent MUST carry the creme dilution gene. Her sire or dam MUST be palomino, buckskin, smokey black, palomino dun, buckskin dun, or smokey grulla for her to be a palomino. You can have her genetically tested to be sure. It's a $50 hair strand test from UC Davis.

Also, as stated in my list of colors above, horses can be dun and creme dilute at the same time. Both the dun and creme modifying gene are only that, modifiers. A horse can carry one or many modifying genes. That's how we have palomino paints, dun appaloosa's, etc. So, it's very possible to have a Palomino Dun!
