Paint people could you please explain Tovero, Overo and...

Last Sun I had posted about my mare who foaled , unknowing she was preg. She is AQHA and bred to a Tovero, the foal was a medicine hat with red chest and three spots on his neck. He was still borne, we are awaiting results on the cause.
Now my question is this; I thought a Tovero was a horse with both the overo and tobiano gene. And I thought overo was recessive, meaning that to get one we would have had to breed to 2 overos. If those things are true then how did we end up with a tovero colt???????????????????????? thanks

Well, I don't get the recessive and dominant part too well, but you only need one overo to get overo.

you would have a chance of overo, a chance of tobiano, and a chance of tovero with that cross

Being tovero gives you a 75% chance of color when bred to solid mares. A tovero has both tobie and overo so it increases your chances.

Both Tobiano and Overo are dominant traits. If the horse has the gene it SHOULD express it. Although there are minimal tobianos and minimal overos that sometimes must be registered as breeding stock. A dominant trait is one that expresses itself in the Hozygous (Think EE and heterozygous Ee forms). Lethal White is a recessive trait. It only becomes a problem when the animal is homozygous for the trait (a "lethal" foal).

Overo is dominant, just like Tobiano, but Overo does not have to express itself, while Tobi will express, even minimally.

Although I have known of a homozygous minimal tobiano stallion who produced two foals that didn't have enough white to qualify for regular paint papers.

Thanks I misunderstood. So the overo will pass the gene but not necessarily express it. Makes sense now. Thanks a bunch
