Save yourself a lot of time and effort invest in a fly sheet/sheet and blanket (to use in appropriate weather).

I own a little pinto shetland pony who has a lot of white. I find that the more washing I do the dirtier he seems to get. Lots of currying seems to help bring out the oils in his coat which possibly make it harder for the dirt to imbed itself into the hair shaft???? I don't know but the currying seems to not just make him cleaner but to keep him cleaner. Also flax seed has seemed to help as well.

I agree. He does get oil in his feed as well as Sho Hoof. He doesnt seem to stain.. I usually just hose him off and he's never yellowed. (Well, his mane and tail are a bit yellow) He just stays caked in mud We also have a huge pond and he stays knee deep in the shallow end eating the water grasses and cat tails. So he sometimes has that fishy-mud smell to go along with the muddy look

FYI- I also own a pinto pony and a Palomino mare...and neither one of them come close to as nasty as Rooster. Tari's white mane and tail never seem yellowed and the pony always looks perfect! Whats really sad is my husbands dream horse is a white-grey arabian or Quarab... so if he gets his horse some day that will add another "white" one to the herd. I'll have to start buying Purple shampoo by the gallon!

It seems like the lighter they are the more that they roll, too. It is a darned shame. My Mom's horse has a lot of white splashed onto her that doesn't stay white too often if we are talking about mud/rain being a factor.

I know the purple shampoo as well. Ah how I have seen it many times! I used to show a bay tovero colt and he had a LOT of white on him that never saw the light of day because he loved to roll so much.

I used to own an "albino". Pink skin makes white hair look even dirtier. It took about two hours to get him clean enough for shows, and if someone used an oil based fly repelent on him, it was like the dirt just materialized out of the air!

Well I know exactly where you are comming from. My very first horse was COMPLETELY White
AS seen in this picture You may also notice the other horse which is horse number 2 and also has alot of white

That brings us to horse number 3 who had even more white

and finally horse number 4

You may ask yourself what was I thinking when I got so many horses with so much white...well it can be summed up in three words ...ooooooh pretty pony. I mostly don't worry about wheather they look clean or not as long as they don't have dirt caked on, but if I take one to a show I like freak out and have nightmares about them getting dirt on their spots.

Yup, I had a creamello and she was so white you could barely see the blaze down her face. Everyday, 5 or 6 times a day she would roll! It never failed! She looked like an Oreo cookie all of the time! Mud on both sides and a white strip down the middle lol. Drove me crazy! I said I'd never have another white horse again......what did I do?? Went and got me a almost all white mini pinto lmao *Smak* Here's my sign!

"White" horses aren't REALLY (in general) any dirtier than their 'dark' buddies. The dirt is on the dark ones just as much - it just doesn't show so their owners don't see it or worry as much.

Doe is a few spot and gets very few stains/dirt on him, Jelly Bean is a leopard and is a dirt/mud/stain/you name it magnet, Rague is a toasted chestnut, near leopard and does get dirt spots but they sort of hide in with her multitude of spots, and Kicks always looked like he had dirt spots but they wouldn't wash off - they were his 'gold coins'.
