Question Overprotective Nanny

This might seem a strange one for you.............

My mare Maria is soon to foal (She's ready to pop - But when?) and she is currently turned out with my other two horses Tally a TB mare and Jazz my rescue horse (also TB), Anyway Tally has got VERY protective over Maria and pushed Jazz out of the herd, I'm guessing that she has sensed a hormone change in Maria and Knows that the foal is due shortly but is this normal????

Jazz is quite respectful of Tally and knows to keep his distance and to be quite honest he is happy enough to stay away grazing at a distance that he can see them but not so close that Tally feels the need to threaten him.

So guys is this a normal herd response, I would understand it if Tally was a stallion or a gelding but is it common in Mares?

I would say she knows that Jazz is a gelding and he's not welcome around a foal.

She is a funny one! Maria is fine with Jazz being around her it's just Tally that seems to object..........Its almost like she is saying "she my friend - back off!" Poor lad doesn't really know what to do with himself - Bless!
