Well, you all know we had aweful weather lately. It was just sunshine, blue sky and about 60 degrees. I had a busy morning (its tax time) gathering papers here and there. Was gone most of the day helping my neighbor with hay. So, I grab the girls from school and being such a great day, how could we not get our princess, prince and of course the Queen bee (Yankee) out for a grooming party. We just came in the house at dark. I hope this weather is to stay.

That picture from 52 pages ago, how funny, she is in the same spot with just that old fence and the area taken down and leveled. How things change.

So, we have no foal. Actually somehow, which is unknown to me, Yankee got out today. When I returned home she was scarfing down on the new grass coming up. It looked as if someone had just opened up the gate area. Weird. Yankee is still very very large, full of milk. I think if she gets anymore milk she will be leaking soon. The adema has gone down somewhat but is still there. So,
  1. Day 23 of producing milk
  2. Already waxed (minimal at least)
  3. Foal is live and hasnt been seen to move now is a full 48 hours and knowing me, I hardly miss a thing lol
  4. I think she is done growing in the belly
  5. Yankee has become very quiet and somewhat docile like today

Sorry, no foal today.

Yankee today

Something also different is she stands like this ALOT without going pee or taking a poo......it seems a bit odd. This picture was taken within minutes from the above. She had just rolled the other side. She stays like this from 5 mins on up then relaxes down again.

Yes she is HUGE momma. She woddles now just to walk and drags her back hooves. She is closer. She did not rummage through the bedding last night, barely ate and walked restlessly around and around. If she was not walking she was standing still, tail up, nipping her belly or legs. I'm sure not much room and when the baby tries to move it is extremely uncomfortable. I'm gonna try to get her out again today and do some grooming and walking (not to much). Maybe stimulate her and also get some adema down. We had a nice brisk walk yesterday and she seemed to enjoy it. Also she has alot of tail swishing going on the last few hours.

I'll post pics later on in the day.

For anyone who knows......since I am expecting this foal by March 4 (Today is my estimated day 334) I am wondering........never seen a foal born

***What exactly does real labor look like? Just signs of sweating. Is there any REAL movements to watch for before she actually lays down? You might be scratching your head right now, but truly I have only seen mares in REAL labor only when they lay down watching videos. Other than that, they act like what Yankee has been since Jan 17th.

***Although I can groom Yankee, she will not allow me to groom her tail or underbelly. She tends to give me a look first then at attempting a side kick. Only sides, neck, butt etc...Can I wrap her tail while she is laying down or should I just leave it alone?

***Do you think this foal is going to be a big one or average? ANd does it continue to grow until born?

I've never seen a horse foal born, but I watched my donkey give birth last spring.
She kept laying down ... maybe 4 times, then the last time she layed down she stayed down. Approximately 15 mintues later her water broke. It was like a tide of brownish water coming out fast.

She was having obvious contractions at that point. After about 2 minutes I started to see some feet. The whole thing was over in about 20 minutes. I didn't wait for her to break the sack (it was my first time and I didn't want anything to go wrong) ... I tore the sack from around his face and made sure he was breathing.

He stood after about 15 minutes and nursed pretty quickly. I tied up the placenta (made a knot so it wouldn't drag the ground and get stepped on). She delivered the placenta completely approximately 30 minutes later.

You can see her having contractions ....

I took a video of the whole thing .... It was the most incredible moment of my life!! (Aside from having my own son of course! )
