Hi everyone. No foal yet. Still signs of labor/discomfort. Her belly looks smaller today, not as low as before. Maybe because I stare at her all the time. Would anyone think I should call the vet for a check? This has gone on since Tuesday if I remember right. Everything looks normal but is it normal to have such extreme labor/discomfort for a full week?

Suggestions?..........and thanks.

It stopped raining today. I let her out and first thing she did and all she did while out was roll and roll and roll again grunting.

It seems pretty normal to have her continue like she is. She has not shown any reason to be concerned yet IMO. The roll, roll, roll grunting is usually stretching and getting stress of her back as well as positioning baby. She's prepping. I think she's fine given that you don't have a certain due date on her. Just keep watching as I know you are. :-) It could go on a while... Sigh.

We had to get 400+ feet of panel fencing for the foal to be safe. (we did not need that much but it came as a package deal) Build a 14x16 shelter. Your right though and I know the only reason they want the foal is because they know it CAN be registered. I especially knew when I asked in reply to their email back in December about the paint stud pedigree and what he looked like. I got no response until a few weeks later and it wasnt about the sire. It was about get ready and if I need help they will come down and help deliver (a three(3) hour drive for them). Is'nt that odd? If there was nothing behind it, why not just say call when its born and we'll send the info. Instead its "we'll take the foal", "we'll buy the foal" and now in desperation emails about Yankee and if she has foaled and they will come. It's absolutely nuts how they are acting. I do not even return email any longer because of the reactions.

Thanks and I will persue the paper registration when the foal is born.
That does seem odd... they sound like strange people. When I bred my mare the breeder told me to call him whenever she went into labor and I kept telling him "What if it's 3am??? I'll call you the next morning" and he insisted! We were pretty good friends though. I wasn't going to wake him up, but we had a problem, so I did end up calling him at 1am. He came out the next morning to check him out.

Maybe they've never been around a foaling mare before and are excited???

Yeah... I would keep the feed and vet bills to myself if I were you... I had two years worth cause my mare had twins the first year and we had to abort. So two years of breeding...

Hopefully they'll send you pics of the stud and you can post them for us to see! I forget if you mentioned it, but do you know what color the Paint stud is? If he's a non dilute then it might be really easy to tell who the daddy is.

Oh, I can't help you about the uncomfortable signs... I don't know if it's normal or not... My mare had a very easy pregnancy, she hardly ever showed discomfort and then 1 week after her due date SUPRISE!!! She ate her whole dinner and everything that night. I sat out and watched her. I went back out about 10:30pm and there he was. I'm kind of glad I missed it, I think I would have panicked!!!

My mom did afterwards... it was the funniest thing! I've never had kids before so you would think it would have been me... We were standing there watching him struggling to get up and she started crying and wailing, "HE'S GOING TO DIE!" I swear I almost slapped her to bring her out of it!

I have no idea on the stud color. I asked with no response. I asked about the possible qtr palomino age etc and nothing in response for an answer. No, these people were bragging in an email I have no worries and a foal will come at the end of March. She said how at one time they had 2 stud and 16 mares as she used to be a breeder. I'm not calling them. When I contact them is when I will be ready to ask for papers. I have friends I have met that can help and a good vet. Although we live a ways away from town, they will come anytime. Very good people.

So right now since 7PM (its almost 8 now PST) I have been watching Yankee. She has rolled in her straw twice and is pacing moving her tail about vigoriously. She is standing on all fours, straight legged and stretching. God she makes me so nervous......lol. Now watch, when it happens I'll miss the whole thing.

Edited at 8:02PM - More strange behavior. Sets tail to the side and grabs it with her teeth, yanking and biting her own tail.

Geez! I hope she has it soon! I've been checking every day since I first saw your thread, hoping for pics of a little one! I know the waiting must be killing you... I really got a good chuckle out of what you said your daughter's told you... sorry! "Go to bed or put makeup on!" KIDS, you gotta love them! How old are they?

Someone told me they look smaller more drawn up before they foal. Because the foal gets into position to come out. Don't know if that is true or not, but maybe that is what you saw tonight.

sounds like she may be getting close with the tail biting, that sounds hopeful!

I agree with Cminor. When the foal is in correct position it follows the lines of the mare's body better and her belly can be less obvious.
