Our rescue - 3 weeks later

I just have to show her off. This is our rescue mare French Alibi, an 18yo TB mare who wasn't "good enough" for trail riding, and was "given away" to who-ever would take her.

She was full of cuts, scrapes and bruises and had a nasty oozing bite mark on her righthand side. She also had a hematoma between her front legs, courtesy of the aggresive herd she was in. One of her previous paddock mates actually ran at us and tried to kick us when we took her from her previous home.

She was shoed too tight and had thrush and an abcess in one of her hooves. So shoes were removed, thrush and abcess treated and front shoes replaced with the correct size shoes as soon as her feet healed. We also put her on a hoof and joint supplement and got the chiro to see her.
The chiro was worried because she stumbled a lot and had a lot of trouble getting up after she's rolled. She also did extremely poorly in the flexion tests. After the chiro worked with her, the stumbling has stopped and she got up more easily. Flexion tests shows much improved mobility now. The chiro said she was sore all over, and was malnourished. She stumbled and has trouble getting up after she'd rolled because she was weak. She didn't want to do too much work on her Alibi was too weak at that point to hande it.

Alibi is BESOTTED with my BF. He gets hugs and wuffs. I get glares and am not allowed to get too close to take a pic. When I greet her she shows me the white of her eye and ignores me but heaven forbid I even talk to the BF. I am treated to a barrage of flat ears! swishing tail! stamped feet! the cow! She has bonded very strongly with him, while being largely indifferent to anything or anyone else. She even prefers to be alone in her paddock (can't say I blame her). I think she will be quite a hot mare, walks activley and trots in-hand with the BF, and is willing to work with him. He finally got to ride her at a walk, twice around the arena, after 3 weeks of love and care.

The face that made us take her:

After 3 weeks (wow look at the colour):

What a difference! At first, I was going to say I wasn't sure if I would be riding her quite yet, but I read that she only had one ride, and it sounded like a special, much-deserved one . I look forward to seeing more pictures of her improvement as time goes on.

BarrelBaby18, Alibi is a "she".

And Barrel_babe, we are riding her to build muscle (topline) - she is sound and gaining weight nicely, so she will be walked twice around the arena (once on each rein) every second day. She is quite energetic but we check her back and legs every day and trot her out before we consider riding. And yes, she was ridden yesterday for the first time.
