our first away show-warning-lots of pics and vids

this was our first show away from the barn. a little background info i got gabe about a year ago straight off the track. ive been training him myself since then and i think ive done a pretty good job for my first experience of training a horse. i know ive got some stuff to work on, like keeping my back straight and shortening my reins, but im giong to start taking lessons again. but anyway this was a hunter/jumper show. i really dont even like these shows, i event but it was a good experience for him. unfortunately they didn't have anything under 2'3 in jumpers so we had to do hunters. it just reminded me of why i dont like it. no offense. lol. i didn't have the right colored saddle pad, i had a flash noseband, his mane was done wrong, his feet werent clean enough(ahem it was muddy. impossible to keep clean.) but overall for our first show it was really good. we got 8th and 6th in crossrails, 5th and 3rd in verticals, and 4th on the flat. here's the pics/vids.

sorry the pics are so big. it takes forever to make them smaller.
sorry this was so long. i didn't realize how many pics we got. lol

I love the pic of you getting your ribbon.

Yeah.. you weren't exactly turned out right but I doubt the judge took off for muddy hooves.

thank you! i was worried that he was going to completely freak out. i didn't even really expect to place. it just shows how far we've come.

but while this is up here what do you think about his eventing potential? i know you cant really see his dressage potential because we're jumping but im just curious because i see a ton of potential in him but everyone at my barn doesn't think so. actually i doubt any of them thought we would come this far so fast. everyone looks at him as a small pony who won't really be able to do anything. (people at my barn think that bigger is better which isn't always the case. he's 15.3 by the way which really isn't that small.) but anyway, what do you think?

Great job! I can see him getting better with each video...like a lightbulb went on in his head, "hey this is fun!" I think you did a great job, on your own, for you first show! Don't appologize for too many pics, there is never too many pictures! lol I think that he will make a great event horse, just keep up the good work...

Congrats!!

I think that any horse is capable of at least lower-level eventing! The main thing I've found, when looking at eventing prospects is seeing how they deal with tough situations. When they are presented with a scary fence or a hard distance, what do they do? That reaction, IMO, tells a lot about the horse. A horse that powers through it may have a career in eventing, if that power can be controlled - a horse that stops may have a harder time, but then again - he may be very well trained, and just needs to learn the ropes. A horse that doesn't even glance at it is basically an obvious choice! I'm not at all saying that a slow horse can't event, and run-away horses are good, and I guess it's difficult to put into words as well. If you're serious about trying eventing, I would hook up with an eventing trainer and give it a shot!
