Most of the horses are still at the track.

I had an offer of $ 800 for the big grey gelding and he flat out refused. Said he wants a min of $ 1500. That way, he knows that he won't end up for meat or flipped for more.

Most of the time, I bang my head on the wall, but I can't say as I totally blame them. With the horse market the way it is, he's looking out for them I guess.

He's looking out for them? That is strange onsidering he is willing to send them on a meat truck.

He's had issues in the past, along with couple of other owners, that they have sold them for cheap before and found out that they were either sent to the auction or taken straight tot he meat man to make some money.

I've found out that some owners would rather put them down themselves or take them straight to the plant. That way they know exactly where they are are.

I know it sounds harsh, but unfortunately, all it takes is one bad apple to spoil the bunch. I can't tell them what to do with their horses. I'm only there to help if they want it.

I had a meeting with the owner of Phenomena, Jose & Dianna's Choice. He is firm on the prices of $ 2000, $ 2000, and $ 1800. IF the wagons don't want them, he will haul them to the plant himself.

Gabby - His price is firm at $ 750. She is slated for euthanization on Tues Aug 18 along with 2 other mares.

I don't get how people have the hearts to do that. But it happens.

While I feel all of these horses DESERVE a good home....the prices he's asking are rediculous. ESPECIALLY when he will take a MUCH LOWER price from the slaughter plants.

This is one of my complaints about these people with horses that "if not sold for the asking price, will go to the butchers". GRRR!!! If people would quit trying to SCAM the horse owning public, and do what's right, we probably wouldn't have near as many horses getting slaughtered.

If I was to want one of those horses, I'd offer him "slaughter house price", with maybe another $50 tacked on for good measure, and see if he turned me down.

I had a conversation with some other people at the track yesterday and they say the same thing.

" If you want them to go to a home rather than the plant, check the people out to make sure they are legit. If they are, sell them for meat price and take your loss. The market is not the greatest and there is no hay."

While I do agree with this, I do background checks. If I don't like what I hear from the references, they don't get a horse. If they are local to me, atleast I can check up on them.

However, it is the owner/trainer who has final say in this situation. All I'm doing is weeding out the tire kickers and bleeding hearts and find good homes for them. Half these horses, I have no idea what they sold for as I walk away when that part of the discussion comes up.

So far, I've placed 6 from the track. I gave one away for free yesterday at the owners request. I'm helping with a partial herd dispersal of 20 head, plus just took pics of 4 more this morning in my community looking for homes.

Unfortunately, I can save them all, but I'll give it a good shot trying though. I have a couple of spots for emergencies as I have just secured my hay supply till next summer.
